Here we go

Can I run a TFI coil without the distributor??

If not, which Dizzy do I want (with TFI) for my 351?

Looks like it's a pretty common upgrade for the jeep crowd. In the jeep upgrade - they keep the stock dizzy, but upgrade to a ford dizzy cap and rotor. Same strategy may work for you. Otherwise, you want the dizzy from a 351 that used a tfi coil - crown vic w/351 dizzy would do it.

im not sure if a tfi coil will work with a non tfi dist.

i'm assuming you have a duraspark dist. i used a tfi coil with duraspark dist but used a hei module on a ford. used hei to try it out and worked prefect.

The TFI coil just provides a better spark. I upgraded the Duraspark ignition on my Jeep and also on an 82 Bronco that had a 351W. I'm assuming you have electronic ignition. The reason the distributor cap is larger on the TFI equipped distributors is to help avoid crossfiring.

I see more information is required.
motor is a 351 from a Crown Victoria. 1987 vintage.
motor completely rebuilt, not that make any difference
Distributor is brand new, meant for a 1983 ford half ton pickup with the fast advance springs installed in it. bought from parts store as old one was crap.
Got the big cap on the distributor with the good parts (NO Chinese stuff)

Yes, I am running a duraspark setup on the motor. Installed on the 302 and running when I barfed the motor (playing to vigorously in the mud). Then I installed the 351.

So you brilliant people you will it work??
I have tremendous faith in this board so someone has to know about this.
Come on guys, impress the living bejesus out of me.

Well, now that you've tossed out all those big words - yes, you can use a TFI coil with your Duraspark setup. I checked with a friend who did it with his Ranchero years ago and he said it worked just fine. It was on a 302, not a 351, but that shouldn't make a difference.

Impressed? :)

As long as your running the bigger cap and rotor, and electronic ignition it will work. It would probaly fry a points setup, and jump accross on a small cap.
