Distributor to roller cam

I need to swap the gear on my 302 distributer to use in a block with a roller cam.

My distributor looks original. Instead of replacing the gear can I swap it out for a newer distributor with steel gear? Will this one for an 85 Mustang Gt work? It loos like the price will be close to gear.

I have a pertronix ignition so I woul d need to remove the plate and wiring.

'85 GT Mustang with 5-speed (5-speed part is important for this) is the correct factory application. The automatic cars do NOT use a duraspark for a roller cam. Most parts stores will now just ask for cast or steel gear, roller needs steel.

Be carefull, I bought one from autozone using this application, and although all their info said it was a steel gear, the one I received was iron. Not real confident in their quality control. I ended up buying the steel gear on eBay for $25-30. Thankfully I had used a different dist for my core and didn't lose my good one.

I plan on keeping the pertronix ignition. I was looking for a distributor that came with the steel gear.
Are there other options, besides replacing the gear.

I dont have any issues with replacing the gear but it wouldnt hurt to replace the distributor of the price was right.

If you happen to have duraspark setup on that thing go with the mustang distributer from the 85 5-speed if not get a Chevy HEI style distributer if you have a body lift. And what I did was buy an electronic distributer with a built in module that needs a separate coil (you could use the one you have now) off of ebay

Still probably more than an investment that I am looking for.

I will look into if my Pertronix ignition is compatible with the mustang distributor but it may be easier to just order the gear.

But, before I order can I use the gear that came with the engine? It's a 92 f250 distributor (EFI).

No different size shafts I'm told. The distributer I bought was like fifty bucks from a shop called whites machine I beleive it was and so far I'm happy but I did just get it....

And google "dirt cheap ignition" you can wire that mustang distributer into a chevy style four wire module that you can screw to the firewall or inner fender. Or you can rob the duraspark module from a junk yard with all the plugs and wires

Did you have luck with the 85 dizzy and pertronix? I'm in the same boat right now.
Thanks,
Tyler

I just ordered a gear from them yesterday before I saw this thread. I should get it today.

I'll follow up with comment also in case it helps somebody in the future.

How did you get yours on? Heat the gear in the oven???

Thanks

What size hole did you order for your gear? The smallest/closet I could get was .0467, and it's too big. I actually think I need a .0466, but I don't see one.

Yea, that's the on I got also. It slides on mine so easy the only thing holding it would be the shear pin. I'll call Summit Tuesday and see what my options are.
Thanks,
Tyler
