I recently picked up a fully assembled 1994 351W that has a Comp Cams retro-fit hydraulic cam shaft in it (part # 35-412-8) which is used to convert an engine that originally came with a flat tappet cam to a roller cam.

It is my assumption that this cam shaft will require a steel distributor gear just like a standard roller cam.

Can anyone verify this for sure?

I would think so but you might just call them to be sure.

No bronze gear with this camshaft. Comp Cams also offers an engineered composite carbon material for this particular application.

My comp cam for a 97 351w roller was actually cast. I don't recall the number but can check. I called a buddy at Ford corporate engineering and tracked down the material used in the 3.8L synchro drive gear which is cast. Tasker was able to get that Ford part number for me. I called Comp Cams and sort of had to train the guy about what information I was looking for. He was less than helpful :-(

I used an Edlerbrock roller cam in my 69 block. Chewed up the gear in 10 minutes with a steel drive gear on a MSD distributer. I kept getting different opinions from guys about what I needed. I finally called Edlebrock and they said use cast gear. I bought new cam and drive gear. All is well now.

I'd call Comp and ask them!!!!

I went with steel, the composite one is pretty pricey. this is interesting.

Call comp and ask.

I got burned once on an Isky. I got a cast hydraulic roller cam. They heat treated the lobes for roller use. Steel gear chewed up the cam.

Roller cams can be cast too. I've heard that Erson roller cams are cast. Could be others too.
Why guess with so much at stake? Just contact the manufacturer.
