Ok, I have a another issue in addition to my Power steering box in the other thread. I don't think they are related so I'm starting another thread for it. I was in 4 high for about 5 miles and then Low for another 10. I got to the point where I was on a regular dirt road and wanted to get out of 4 wheel drive. Shift into 2 wheel and it pops right out after 10 feet. Tried 4 high and had the same problem. Back to 4 low and its fine. Repeated this several times and it would only stay in 4 low. I did this no less than 10 times. Tried it one last time and it went right in and it stayed engaged with no problems. I have had it pop out before but never had this much trouble with it. Its a J shift transfer case and I know they are tempermental so what's the problem? Will atwin stick solve my problems? Can you tell my wife that it will fix everything so she will hand over the check book?

New balls and springs from JBG were about $8 last time I checked.

You can do it without pulling it out. The rear spring and ball is on the top side of the tcase and it is tough to get to but doable without a body lift. The front side is easy. Front spring/ball is under the rear of the two plugs.

I just rolled under there a few minutes ago and it looks like I'll have enough room to get it done. I have 3 inches of body lift so that will help. So that should be my problem? I don't need a twin stick?

There could be some other causes like a worn out shifter or internal D20 issues but I'd try the $8 fix first.

I would like to have an excuse to go twin stick but if i don't fix this, a twin stick won't stay in any better than the j shift will it?

When I had the J-shifter it was really sloppy, hard to shift consistently, and would sometimes pop out of 2 high. I went to a twinstick and it solved all those problems for a couple years. Then it started popping out of gear again. Thats when I finally replaced the springs.

why are you in such a hurry to twin stick it?

My well maintained "J" shift will go from 2 to 4 and back faster than any twin stick I've seen. I realize that a twin stick conversion will give more options but not every application makes it worthwhile.

Really I'm not in a hurry to twin stick it. I would like to have one but I'm more concerned with getting it to stay in the range I put it in.

Twin stick wont solve your issue. There's quite a few guys running around with bungee cords on there twin stick coversions because they didnt install new springs and detent balls.

This has never happened to me but it sounds like a good idea to just replace the spring and ball if your transfer case is out even if it is workin ok. The parts can't cost much. I've got close to 300K on mine and it's never been apart.
