wich steering box do you use?
Before this race we were using Bronco boxes. We recently switched to a 4x4x2 box because it has a beefier case (case cracked on last Bronco box) and is easier to get parts for.

Ah good idea on the 4x4x2. Here's my cracked sector from 2017 I was talking about it. Drove 10 more miles on it and changed it.

Here's another short clip of the electric VW being towed, without a driver in it, through the first special stage on day 3. This was less than 17 miles from the start. I imagine they were doing it to either save the batteries or possibly even recharge them but it sure seems to me like they didn't drive it through the entire course like everyone else.

This was after our crash when we were headed back to town for repairs.

We pulled the steering box apart to make sure the sector shaft wasn’t fractured and were pleasantly surprised to see it wasn’t.

It would seem you only need two teeth to have steering, we raced one more day (200+ miles) on this box before swapping on the last day

Wow! Raced on just the two lateral teeth! I bet this new stuff couldn't handle that kind of failure and still function!...and this was the 4X4X2 box?

Video was very good at expressing how a bumpy short wheel base has a mind of its own. Must have been a real treat back in the day with crappy shocks, surprised any Broncos would have made it to the end. Hands must have been worn out for days holding on to the wheel. do you swap drivers and if so how often?
