Dropping Fuel Tank - Air Leaks

I have been having some air leak issues seen through the Fuel Filter, causing havic with the carb/engine. I've replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and all hoses in the engine bay. I've made the decision to drop the fuel tank (there's only a single rear tank on the truck).

Because of all the effort I'm going to go through to drop it, I wanted to get some insight of things I might want to do when I drop the tank and inspect the sender/dip tube/filter etc. Is there anything to look for?

Once I re-install the tank, what are peoples feelings regarding running 5/16" nylon tubing from the tank all the way to the Fuel Pump - eliminating the metal tubing that's in mediocre shape at best. If I do it, is there any "firesafe" tubing that I need to use, or is standard nylon tubing acceptable?

one of the vendors sell OEM style nylon fuel tubing, which is what I'm going to use, it lasted 44 years first go around.
