EDIS pushing Coil-on-plug

I'm wondering if a guy could use the EDIS computer to drive a coil-on-plug setup so as to get rid of plug wires that so easily burn thru causing shorts and misses.

I recently found my number 8 plug boot rubbing the auto shifter rod, grounding it most of the time. I switched that plug to a 90 degree plug, but I'll be danged if it doesn't feel like the miss has come back.

I'm tired of plug wires, rotor and caps going bad and having to be maintained. I know COP is not the best because you have coils go bad, but... gotta be better than missing half the time.

I own 2 cars with coil on plug ignitions and would far rather have the coil packs and plug wires on them. I've had to replace 3 on one car. So reliability isn't there. The long boots and coils are awkward and bulky outside the long holes on overhead cam engines. Maybe you could bend the rod to clear the boot.

Good point on length. That #8 cylinder is already tight...

Coil in plug is FAT there won't be enough room for headers for sure. If you buy the OEM Explorer plug wires the have some built in shielding to protect them from heat and chaffing if you route them the OEM way.

EDIS will work with COP, but it will still be in a wasted spark configuration. The individual coil packs have high enough of a failure rate to keep me from using them myself. Mounting them over the headers can't help them much either. It can be done rather tastefully though:

Personally I like the Chrysler coil packs. They are lower profile and don't take proprietary plug wires. So, you're not out $100 if you burn a wire.

Thanks efiguy. I'm just tired of hearing blurbs every now and then when it's idling and thinking about it possibly being a plug wire shorting out....

I run headers because I broke two sets of manifolds by not having inner fenders. Cold Water and hot cast iron don't mix..., I'm thinking I have some sleeve stuff of some sort that'd keep them from cross firing.. Not sure what is. The heat doesn't seem to be bothering the boots. It's just where the wires cross and touch that I worry about constantly.

Much easier and cheaper to route plug wires where they are out of the way of everything harmful than to spend a big chunk on the conversion set-up you're referring to. I've seen far too many of those modern individual coils that go bad and most anyone needs a large bank roll to keep buying them because they ain't cheap.
