so I am 500 miles from home and my son calls about his Bronco...just flat died. Drove out of the driveway and down the street for approx 150 feet and quit. Sounds to me like a fuel pump given the distance. We are running an electric pump from the 23 gallon fuel tank...initially the truck had Holley FI but is was horrid, switched to a Holley Carb 570cfm, ran a feed back psi regulator and been happy since.

So we have been running the Holley electric pump that came with the FI and if I need to replace it, looking for a good electric pump to do the job...recommendations?

Other options I am looking at is a blown fuse, bad wires, ignition coil (Mallory Blaster) went adios... truck will roll over but will not fire and again, given it went the approximate distance for the fuel bowls to suck dry.....the kid is about to kill something...just went through several months ago the engines electrical system..

see if fuel squrts in the carb, he will have to take the air cleaner off and look inside. If no gas squrts in i would say its the pump or out of gas. If it does check fuses. also check the wires on the starter sil if one is loose it will die

we have a fuel pressure gauge inside the engine compartment, it is a matter of the 5'2 100lbs wife getting the hood up on a lifted EB. Tank is 1/2 fuel from what he said..

Thanks for the thought on the stator

put a gallon of gas in and try again...

watch a guy rig a fuel can / pump up on the trail, then back at camp cut a hole in the floor to replace a fuel pump just to find out there was no fuel in the tank.

check for spark, disconnect the coil wire from distributor, put the bare end about a 1/4" from any ground and crank, there should be sparks jumping across

pour some gas into carburetor bowls thu vent pipe and see if it starts.

Good luck.

If you need a fuel pump the carter P4070 is a very good pump and availible at a lot of parts stores.

I have that one too- it works berry nice. But you should be able to hear an external electric fuel pump, or hear nothing if it is not working? The P4070 is a loud mother!

+1 for checking to see if fuel is getting to the carb.

I watched a guy at TDS spent an entire day changing a fuel pump, regulator and filter only for me to walk up and show him how a shitty connection was grounding out- 30 seconds later he was running again. Don't throw parts after problems, trust me on that!

so the tow guy showed up and he poured some fuel in the carb and it fired up. I have a pressure gauge for the fuel pump on the firewall, asked the wife and the tow guy to look at and give me the reading...never heard from them again...hmmmmm

Regardless, filters are 4 months old, maybe picked up some crap or the carb filter is blocked or pump went poop..will see when I get home Saturday...

BTW....1/2 tank of fuel in it...good kid.

I got to disagree about the loudness of the Carer. I found that it is about the quietest of the aftermarket pumps out there. And a great choice. Just about the only thing I will ever run for a low pressure application.

My pump that came with the Holley FI has a noticeable sound, nothing more than the typical electric pump hum.. a little bit of outside noise and you cannot hear it..

if it is the pump, I always check for electricity before I start tearing things off. Fortunately this one mounted nice and easy to get to if needed. Regardless, a better filtration system is in hand at the pump...on my list of things, so it bumps up now.

ok, so if I have a pump issue I am going with the Carter, read a bit and it seems to be the deal...filter will be installed, looking at a cartridge type..anyone see any problems with this pump pulling through a cartridge filter?

it may be the quietest, but it certainly is a noticeable hum to indicate if it is working... or at least mine is.

I run mine just outside of the main tank and it runs through a regulator in the engine bay and it will easily run 6-8 psi to regulator... dunno about the cartridge filters. I just do the cheapy inline filters and a clear one after the regulator so i can see the gas-a-flowin

The Carter has an inlet screen to protect the pump. If there is junk in the tank I like to see a cheap coarse filter before the pump and a good fine filter after the pump.

The Carter rotary vane pumps (P4070 , P4594, etc) are nearly bulletproof. And if they do take a bullet they are completely rebuildable.

As for noise, I have one feeding the high pressure pump in my EFI system. After running it without an accumulator for almost 10 years I installed one I made myself early last year. So now the Carter pump pushes fuel into the accumulator, and any fuel the HP pump can't consume returns to the tank. Reasons for installing the accumulator don't matter to this discussion, but what surprised me was how much quieter the Carter pump became. Among other things it's no longer dead-heading anymore.

tore into the carb to check for dirt but I knew there would be none...needed to change the power valve anyways so I did that.

I forgot about the other filter I have from Jegs that I incorporated with my pressure reg...the screen was clean.

Ordered a new Carter pump plus wiring harness with relay built in...everything else has checked out perfect.

This was all worth it anyways as the new power jet made huge performance difference plus I got around to resetting the float levels as I found they where way too low..now the beast has no bog and is pure power from the touch..
