Electrical Guru's please comment

A/C compressor clutch wire harness from 98 Explorer -

Would I be correct in assuming that the black wire with the yellow strip is the positive side, while the black wire is the ground?

I only ask since there is a diode between the two...

That's ugly!

Looks similar to a Honda I had in the shop. The previous shop didn't get the air purged after a radiator replacement and it scored the walls where the air pocket was trapped.

Did it break the rings?
