Electronic Voltage Regulator

Just thought id put this up there for others to think about. My volts to the battery were a bit high 16volts i think and another thing i hated was that at idial, my headlight and dash light would dim or pulsate.

I picked up a new style electonic voltage regulator (as apposed to the old school mechanical regulator i had). The electonic one from OReilly's is easy to spot because on the backside its all epoxyed sealed up. The other parts stores werent epoxyed and i wasnt sure they were electronic. The new one is shorter also, and the cheeper one they have is shorter yet!

I bolted the new one in place, grounded it, plugged the harness in, and hooked up the pos battery cable. (IMPORTANT TO DO IT IN THAT ORDER!!!)

Now my light dont pulsate or dim, and the volts to the battery are 14.5

Such a cheep and easy fix, just letting others know!

I also bought everything to run the headlight off some relays, but since the voltage reg fixed my problem ill hold off on the relays till i have a bit more free time.

I'll attest to these things working. My dad has an old F250 Hi-Boy that we fought the electrical system on until we swapped out the regulator. That was the first thing I did to my Bronco when I brought it home in 1989. No problems since, and I have upped the stock alternator and it still handles it fine.

Oreillys part number is a R400. Its what they listed for my 68 bronco. They have a cheeper one or the one i got with lifetime warr.

I looked at two from autozone, but couldnt tell if they were electronic or not. Napa didnt have any in stock. But oreilly's both were electornical, and easy to spot because of the epoxy on the bottom sealing everything up.

They're all electronic, but the ones you're talking about are the solid-state electronic voltage regulators which have no moving parts like the electro-mechanical varieties. One advantage to the solid-state units is that they tend to hold up to vibration and such better, especially the fully potted versions, making them better for off-road use. A down side is that when they fail, they're done...you can't make them work with bubble gum and twine on the trail like you theoretically could with the electro-mechanical units.
