What do you need to pass a 1977 bronco with a 90 efi 5.0 mustang engine? Should I even bother buying a 77 efi with no emissions? to much of a headache?

I know you can get classic car insurance but I plan on driving it a lot and don't want any restrictions.

Last I checked the emissions requirements are based on the year of your vehicle and not the year of the motor.

So if your 5.0 runs well then you shouldn't have much trouble.

Where in AZ are you?

You will need what it originally had, evap, cats, EGR, thermactor.
You may need to get a referee to allow the update, but expect to need all the mustang emissions stuff in place and working.

Surprise, AZ so emissions is required. But don't they do visual with 75 and newer? how much would it cost to source the emissions stuff

Let me tell you my experience.
I bought a 76 with no air pump for the emissions.
Even the motor pass the emissions, did not pass the visual inspection, because the book call for a pump. I tried to get all the emission stuff and was close to $300 new or $150 used.
So decide to invest on a newer motor with all the emissions. But is worth it, they run smoother then the carburator.

So all you need was a smog pump? Did you have an efi?

No, smog pump, canister, egr valve, and catalyzer converter.
You will have to check the mustang engine emission equipment to see what are you missing

from personal experience here in CO

check the DSO on your VIN plate

some DSO didn't require smog pump, even in 77

you would still need the other stuff though

That's why I like my 70. The only emissions equipment from Ford was the PCV valve. At the emissions station the don't pop the hood and don't even check the gas cap. With EFI I breeze through the test.

you might be in luck with that DSO. Mine was TN as well but I can't recall if it was Mephis. I will check and let you know my DSO. The tech here in CO was very detailed in researching what all was required.

Essentially all CA rigs, big cities, and high altitude DSO had to have air pump.

I had to have PCV, EGR, CAT(s), charcoal canister for fuel vapor, non-vented gas cap.

But no air pump.
