Any idea what I should expect to pay for a 302 engine rebuild in Thiusand Oaks CA area. Thanks

Just doing the machine work and then assembling it yourself? Or letting the machine shop do everything?
Probably a minimum of 1500 to 2000 with you doing at least some of the final assembly. More like 3500 to 4500 to have them do everything.

Just a guess of course, but it’s probably within that range. Member Garberz is down that way so might have more insight.
Especially given the recent increases in every aspect of our lives.

As you may be aware, crate motors are more and more a better deal bang for the buck wise.
You pay a little more upfront, but you get some pretty amazing set ups and typically a warranty on top of that.

But obviously, the only way to keep an original engine in a vehicle is to rebuild that one specifically. I do it because I enjoy it, but the originality is kind of a thing more and more these days I would suspect.

My last 351w was about 2k. That was with me doing the disassembly and getting back a long block. That was just before covid and all the supply line issues.

That is very dependent on what type of motor you desire.
Machine work is expensive (Quality machine work), parts are really expensive these days, and Thousand Oaks ain't cheap.
Check with CHP, Coast High Performance, and you will be shocked at what they charge for a motor, but they have a very good reputation.
As always, "Good work isn't cheap, and cheap work isn't good".

And if you do get a quote from them, be sure to report back so we know what the latest and greatest prices are ourselves.

Good machine shop work IS pretty pricey, but you certainly don’t want to be cheap on an engine build. Like it was said, if you add in performance parts (AFR HEADS, for example) you can add $1,500 and up. Get the rotating assembly balanced, more $$$. I went from a simple rebuild of a 5.0 roller motor at $1,700 to a 347 stroker with a lot of performance parts and ended up at $6k. I’M happy with it, but my wife…well I ain’t going there. Lol

This was done a year ago...
Balanced, reused the stock cam, >020 pistons, Shop put the short block together, I assembled the rest. 8 week wait as the parts were slow to come in and the shop is one of the last in the area and they are buried with work.

Short block rebuild and Heads service 1997 Explorer motor (P-heads)$ 2,705.12
