Hey guys,

I want to get my engine and engine bay area cleaned and painted. I really have no idea what's involved in pulling an engine and then re-installing but I was quoted the following and would like to know your thoughts.

Remove engine, clean and paint. Clean, prep and paint engine bay area and re-install engine.....between $800 and $1,100.

Thoughts?

Also, if I go ahead and pull the engine is there anything mechanical I should do preventive wise while it's out.

It's not a bad quote, but if you could pull you engine yourself the job would make for an interesting weekend of work.

That really isnt that bad. Pulling the engine isnt really that hard... But it isnt particularly easy either.

Send us a pic of what your engine and engine bay currently look like. Then we can tell you if it's a good deal!

Didn't you just get your truck painted? Should've had it done then!

Is there any rust in the engine bay? Aprons, core support, wheel housings all in good shape? Remove the fenders and grille and paint the aprons too? If there are any rust issues, now is the time to address them. One thing always leads to another.

$1100 is very reasonable price if it's r&i engine, wiring harness, everything on the firewall, ect. and then paint.

Thanks,

No rust in bay area, so no repairs needed. The Bronco was just painted but they did not do engine removal. At the time I wasn't that concerned...but now that the outside looks so good I cringe every time I open the hood.

Not doing a show quality project here, leaving the wires, etc. and just wrapping those things up....I just wasn't sure how much removing the engine and putting it back would be. Thought about just painting around the engine bay with black but it would really look better with engine pulled and using the body color.

painted mine with duplicolor in the cans, didnt even remove the engine, power washed, removed everything else and clean all the parts, cleaned some remaining grease by hand, scuffed up old paint with sand paper, used duplicolor primer and paint, still looks good today, I even took the hood off and did the underside if it.. even at car shows they cant tell it was paint out of a can.

I would do it myself. I didn't do my Bronco (yet) but did do my 69 Mach 1. Pulled motor, washed and degreased the hell out of it then painted the bay with high temp Duplicolor black rattle can. It looks nice and has really held up over the years. Like with all paint, it's all in the prep.

Pulling a motor isn't that hard nor is installing it. The mach 1 with a big block is one of the tightest fits there is and I only had issues removing and installing the headers....with all the room a bronco has, it will be out in no time at all. Wasn't a "cherry picker" on the list of wants anyway?

Yeah,
If your not looking for a show quality job, start with a spray degreaser and power washing.
Once good and dry take time to mask off with painters tape and use high temp paint on the motor and whatever else on the bay.

That is a silly amount of money to pull an engine and paint - without more details anyway.

The engine is easy to pull - there are damn near no wires to worry about, the hardest deal would be the transmission, and that isn't even hard!

I would say it would make a great opportunity to learn more about your Bronco and take the time and do it yourself. I would look for a friend or a helper who is knowledgeable in this, which isn't much - but an extra pair of hands sure comes in handy.

My bet is that they didn't quote you for rattle can paint. If your going to color match the engine bay to the exterior color ( I recommend this on an EB) they're going to be into paint and materials $200.

My firewall had some kind of undercoating crap stuck to it. Took me about 4 hours just to get that scraped off and cleaned up.

If you do it yourself and you have a compressor, cherry picker, paint gun, DA, assorted other tools you can do it for the $200. If you have to pay a shop to do it for you than you have to expect them to pay their bills. I wouldn't do it for you for less than $1000.

Oh and to answer the other half of your question: while it's out I would check the condition of the clutch for sure if its a stick. Rear main seal for sure if it seems to have been leaking at all.
