Looking for some help swapping in an explorer 5.0 in my bronco. I recently was able to get a 99 5.0 but without a computer and a cut up wiring harness. I plan on tearing the engine apart and rebuilding it, but now I’m looking for what I need to make the efi work. An Explorer 5.0 engine harness around me are hard to come by, but there are a few foxbodys around me. So could I use the explorer motor and efi components with fox body wiring and computer? I know I would have to convert to a distributor, but what else? I’m also running a manual transmission so the mustang computer makes sense for compatibility.

It is doable to convert a 99 5.0 to a mustang OBD 1. A 96 Explorer harness is the closest to the Mustang, but a 99 harness should have the returnless fuel line. So you might have to pick up a fuel rail with a return, you can use an early Explorer one. One of the issues is Mustang ECU's can be a little hard to find and pricey. The harness that WH's sells works well and most of the smog is deleted. I believe Ron Francis makes them and they are based on Ryan's harnesses of many years ago.

Then there is the smog (EPA) component, as in EFI Guy can't delete smog from 99 motor ECU to go into an EB, especially if you have Bi-annual smog tests. I would suggest reaching out to him and having a chat about what he can do or not do. Probably the same with Mustang ECU's.
I'm glossing over a lot of things that need to be done...

I don’t have any smog test so that’s not an issue for me. I looked into the wild horses 5.0 harness but wasn’t sure if it worked with the explorer sensors and mustang ecm? There are a couple mustang computers near me not too crazy priced and then there are some late foxbody harnesses for cheap. Are mustang or the wild horses harness compatible with the explorer intake/ sensors? Can I use mustang sensors in the explorer to make it all work?

I might be able to help. I just pulled the EEC-IV (OBD 1) harness out of my Bronco. It was originally a Ford Racing harness, really just a 1993 Mustang 5.0 harness, that I bought new from Ford in 2001. Four years later I modified it so I could run EDIS. It requires a chip in the computer to flip the bit so it recognizes the EDIS sytem; I ran it using an A9L ECU. Is no longer a thing of beauty since it's been in my Bronco for almost 20 years, but it worked flawlessly until I removed it, engine, transmission (NV4500), transfer case etc.

I removed it because I'm installing a 4R70W automatic, and I'm building a custom harness around an Explorer 5.0 PCM, since it will run the 4R70W natively. I'm planning on doing all the reprogramming of the PCM myself, which will be fairly extensive since it will also be running my 408 stroker.

I believe 904Bronco can vouch for the thing. Send me a PM if you want more information.

I sold a 5.0 from a 1997 Explorer to a guy. He isn’t going to use the ECM or harness. He wants $250.
