hey,

just wondering what throttle cable options we have for our explorer 5.0 swaps

i am running (very soon is than plan) a 96 explorer 5.0 with the EGR elbow removed.

just going off memory but if i remember correctly someone here mentioned a mustang throttle body and some kind of spacer?

i see JSmall has more of the custom brackets to adapt the explorer throttle cable available soon and i just want to make sure i know all my options. getting something local is preferred for many reasons like US exchange, shipping, brokerage fees.

all info and pics of what everyone has setup is appreciated.

thanks

I have used the stock explorer cable and many others have also, slight modification tho the stock pedal and it works well. I have also used a locar universal that works well also

how did you adapt the explorer cable without the egr elbow? the elbow has provisions for the cable bracket.

I modified the throttle cable bracket to fit onto the throttle body. Not really too much work. I recently bought JSmall’s bracket because it’s a lot cleaner look.

For the pedal end, I welded a short piece of 3/16” tubing to the end of the stock pedal linkage that snaps onto the pedal. I just used the end of the linkage, discarded the rest. I removed the stock Explorer inner cable from the housing because I want to be able to replace the cable when it breaks. I use a bicycle shifter cable and a simple cable stop at the pedal end. I keep a spare cable in my parts box. The stock Explorer cable assembly will work, but when it breaks you’ll need to have a complete assembly to replace it.

If I may add to Mark's post...
Last time I looked, some of the early Explorer Throttle cables were obsolete from Ford. So pull a spare if you go that route. Also there are minor differences in the cables through the years... Found that out during Pick-n-pull adventures...

Regarding your question about 96 explorer/mustang mix...

My 96 has EGR with Mustang EGR spacer and a modified Explorer 65mm TB. Then I used a Foxbody Mustang Accel cable. The components used in 96, still had the same plugs as the mustang. And the 96 cooling tubes with the by-pass can be adapted the provide the the cooling for the EGR spacer.

I make it sound simple, but there is some work involved to do this. And you need to understand both systems to make them work together.

The earlier cable housings had a square fitting that snaps into the firewall. The later models, 98’ on from what I’ve seen have a round end. The round plastic housing end snaps right in to the stock hole that holds the stock linkage grommet. The early housings with the square end will take a bit of fabricating.
