By saying bushing you mean the spindle I hope. Here is the one I used. http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm
I will take a pic of the latch I used and post it tomorrow..got to looking and I don't have a pic of it..guess I got carried away with other projects...

Here is where I got the idea from... This is the latch style I used (MSC Industrial), but the one I found actually has a lever that keeps the handle from coming unlatched. http://myweb.cableone.net/wdohrn/carrier.htm

Tough, strong, heavy.
It has been beat, dragged over rocks, slammed into boulders and only has scratchs in the paint.
It has pulled trailers what were overloaded before we drove the tractor into the trailer, the it has withstood pulling the trailer out from under the tractor after the tractor became stuck in the trailer. The spare tire is mounted solid enough that it can rub the ground if need be and not hit the body. Afterwards, it is still aligned and swings easily. Locks open with an old Warn hub so the tire doesn't swing into you when parked on a side hill.

For food for thought...

my bumper

Still need to add some D rings and I want to add a bumpstop between the space between the carrier and the tailgate. Now that I think about it, it would be nice to make the gas can carrier removeable and swapable with say a cooler or in addition to. The plate would have to be moved. Maybe somewhere on the spare with some of those nutlight doohickies. HiLift on the cage works for now, but I would like to get it outside at somepoint on the front or rear bumper for a little more safety.
