Fabtech - Factory Spare Tire Carrier Dress Up

Thought I'd share this for any of you guys out there who are like me and purchased a bronco with the original tire carrier hinges painted onto the tub (therefore no ability to remove them without a paint job in the near future) but don't care for the look of them. I drove it around for a while with the carrier off and the hinges protruding from my passenger side until I couldn't stand it any more. It was time to do something. The carrier was going back on.

I had seen a baja style tire carrier on the back of a lifted jeep a few months back and really liked the look of it so I thought I would do something like that on my bronco. After a good bit of searching I found a fabtech spare tire mount that was intended to be used on the floor of a truck bed and decided i would adapt that to the bronco tire carrier.

I didn't get any pictures of the 'fabrication' process but I took me about an hour and a half to do it without the right tools. (Think someone with a 1" drill bit on a press could do it in 20 minutes) Hogged out the little 1/4" hole for the factory mount to a little over 1" diameter hole for the massive 1" stud on the fabtech mount. Had to drill another hole on the top and bottom sides of the large hole to mount the other portion of the tire carrier. Also the supplied bolts weren't long enough so I upgraded to some longer grade 8 hardware and nylon lock nuts...and that was about it. Put it together and slapped a spare on my bronco. And I actually liked the way it looked!

Thoughts? Questions? Concerns? Thanks, guys.

Yeah I did some reading on the forum before I put it together. I know the stock one isn't that strong but a new rear bumper with a tire carrier was not in the budget

Thanks. That's a 3.5/3" lift using parts from JBG with some generic brand (I wanna say Ridge Runner. They were on it when I bought it) 35x12.50 Radials on 15x10 Mickey Thompson Classic IIs
