Factory "Reduced Sound Level" Exhaust

Okay, here's one I've been curious about for a long time.

Pretty much every EB window sticker I've ever seen -- as well as option info on the period road tests -- lists one of the options as "Reduced Sound Level Exhaust" for some small amount of money.

So, does anyone know what a NON reduced sound level exhaust is? Would that be for off-highway use only? Did it not have a muffler? How much louder could it have been?

Please chime in if you know!

I was watching a Jey Leno interview and he was talking about his dad ordering a car but he picked the engine. 428 Police intercepter, muffler delete;)

Leno's Car

Yeah, I heard that one too. Jay himself has admitted to occasionally telling "tall tales" and I think that might have been one of them.

I don't think there was ever a "muffler delete" option on cars that were going to be licensed and registered. Even the factory lightweight Dodge Hemis (intended purely for drag racing) and the Boss 429 Mustang had mufflers of some sort.

A few buddies & I got a tour of his garage last week and when we came upon a early
'60's Galaxie they told about that. He work at a Ford Dealership, told his dad that he would get a better discount & order a Big Block, 4-speed, muffler delete car

I don't know about the option, but, I do know that when I got my Bronco with the factory muffler and catalytic converter it was VERY QUIET. Almost silent.

Yeah, I think it was muffler size or something. My friend's 71 Halfcab has it and you cannot hear the truck at all. Has 26k miles on it and it's FOMOCO muffler. I should try to find a part number... My 72 had the original muffler but it sounded like your average ford truck going down the road.

Here is what I have found in researching the tailpipe while restoring my Stroppe that came with the R.S.L. exhaust.
It looks like it was a "S" bend in the tailpipe.

Ah, so the R.S.L exhuast point more rearward, whereas the non R.S.L just sticks out to the side.

How funny...why didn't they just make them all the same way? They had to charge extra for the additional 6" of tubing and the cost to bend the pipe?

I have seen those but they were all on 6 cyl, havn't seen any on the 8's, not saying they didn't exist I just havn't seen any. I guess when the 8 cyl was ordered no one wanted the reduced sound exhaust with the 8.

According to this, it wasn't available on anything except the V8. Could be that it was always included with the six though.
