Flowmaster 50 series owners..

Hey guys-

I need exhaust. My '74 is essentially true dual straight pipes. Loud.

I'd like to tone it waaay down, but not turn it off..

I am looking at Walker 21400, but started looking at Flowmaster 50's last night..

I don't want anything near 40's.. How do the 50's compare?

Can you hear a radio going down the road? Talk to the person in the passenger seat?

I ran a pair of 50s on my '78 Bronco for a long time. Loved 'em...perfect combination of agressive sound outside and very little sound inside. I have 40s on one of my EB and those are very obnoxious all around, by comparison.

Now 50s on an EB...can't speak directly to that setup.

I had dual 60s on a 4X4 p/u and they were pretty sweet. Sounded great, quiet inside. I wanted the 50s at the time, but the shop (in Alaska) had to order and wait or put the 60s on, so I went with the 60s and was very pleased with the rumble.

When/If you decide to use a Flowmaster 50 for 2 into 1, be sure you contact them as there are 2 versions of the muffler, one is a single inlet dual outlet and the other is the opposite which is what you will want. They will be 2 2-1/2" inlets and a single 3" outlet. That is what I am going to use on my EB.

I have a 2 into 1 50 series muffler split back into two. Sounds great. Here's a video of mine before I changed to EFI and routed the pipes out the side. I highly recommend running the pipes out the side. It's a little bit loud but has a nice low rumble to it.

I have some recent videos with my Explorer motor and new pipe routing. I just need to load them onto my computer. I will try to get that done this week and update it here.

I won't lie I have had thoughts of changing to something a little more quiet but haven't been able to steer away from the flowmaster sound.

Dual 50's on mine fed by L&L headers and a crossover pipe positioned before the mufflers. My old mud tires are louder than the exhaust, so yes you can carry on conversations in the cab while cruising.

If you want an efficient muffler that won't rob power you may reconsider Flowmaster.

A straight through design is much better on power.

Does anyone remember the short video from a few months ago where someone fired up their Bronco with just the engine and exhaust in the frame, but with no body yet?
It was in a garage and basically just a rolling chassis. It only ran for a few seconds, but that was one wicked sounding system!

I tried searching for it not long after, but could not bring it back up. I actually looked under your posts Fairlane because I thought it was actually one of yours.
If anyone has a link to that one, I'd like to find out not only what system was used, but what else was done to that super clean sounding engine.

Well, I went by the exhaust shop just to see what they'd charge me for a headers back setup with a single 50 series and wound up just telling him to do it. Going Thursday to get it done.

I can always change it down the road.

Cool! If I can make one small recommendation, have them put the y right before the muffler. My experience showed that having the y dump right into the muffler sounded a lot more throaty and defined than having a long section of 3" pipe before the muffler.

If you're using the two inlet muffler that's even better. I hope it turns out well.

I used Dynomax ultraflo. My whole system consists of Hedmann hedders ( that's how they spell it), 2 1/2 inch pipe into the Dynomax mufflers and out back to the sides. I will try and get some pictures posted.

Check out pypes performance exhaust, I picked up some SS 3" mufflers and i chose the loud ones, totaly impressed---checked out everything else physicaly and dollar wise went with the pypes because they looked as good but way less dollars. Low and behold i am totaly impressed with constuction and sound for the mufflers i've forgotten to tell people about these. Once price choice was a good thing

Cranked my 331 for the first time today. Magnaflow xl 3 chambers. Sounded great . not too loud but a great tone. Havent driven it yet but ill try to get some sound clips

I used the 3 disk in front of my 70 and had to cut off a disk so I could hear it again.

I still have the flowmaster tone.

I just changed my mufflers. I had 40 series, which were ridiculous.. I really wanted to go with 50 series (Always been a flowmaster guy), but when my exhaust shop threw magnaflow 18"'s and i heard it..I was sold..and apparently they're better quality..

Probably not what you were looking for. Open headers!

I have a Dynomax VT on there now (dual 2.5" into single 3" into muffler). Still loud. May change it for a Flowmaster 50 or something.

You're right though. Not quite the same thing as I was looking for, but nothing like a good set of open headers to really rattle your brain around a little bit.

I knew we were in for a real gem of a video the second the young'un walked into the scene with the ear-protectors on.
Looks like he was orchestrating the whole thing and enjoying hanging out with the big boys.
