not sure if the close-up pic makes it look worse than it really is, or if it really is as bad as it looks.

Wow. Having been low man on the totem pool in a machine shop for many years (read: get all the boring and dirty jobs..grinding flywheels included) and an engine rebuilder for 35.. I have to say that is one of the worst cases of heat checking I have ever seen. That flywheel is due for a replacement, I'm afraid.

That is a very good pic, super bright, sharp and detailed. I can almost see down into the cracks and would agree with bmc69 and the others.

thanks guys, i'm glad there's no doubt I need a new one.

I was looking on WildHorses and see they have a new flywheel but it says it will NOT work with old style 3-finger style pressure plates. I had already purchased a slightly used clutch from a friend and it looks to be what the description on WH4x4 is talking about.

Anyone know why this style won't work with WH flywheel? is there somewere else I can get a flywheel that WILL work with 3-finger pressure plate? I don't really want to buy another clutch and I dont really want to re-use the old pressure plate (diaphragm style) since it looks like the fingers are bent.

thanks,
dan

I think the diaphram style clutches are smoother operating than the 3 finger. More consistent force on the pressure plate.

I don't know why it shouldn't work. I have changed clutches from the 3 finger cover type to the diaphram (LUK) type a few times without changing the flywheel. The bolt patterns are the same.
You do need a new flywheel though - that one is shot.

That flywheel is toast. If you're interested, I have an almost new flywheel that I bought from Toms. It's 164 tooth 28oz. $50.

I'd also recommend coughing up for the diaphram style pressure plate.

If you have it this far apart I would spend the extra money to get an upgraded pressure plate too. Those 3 fingers were ok back in the day, but the new diaphram ones are much better and will last you longer. Just my 2 cents.
