Fuel pump lost prime

The '68 died on me yesterday, acting like it was starved for fuel. Got her home and started the basic trouble shooting. Determined the pump was not getting gas to carb.

Replaced pump and still same problem. Cant get gas to the pump. Fuel line is two year old rubber fuel lines. Possible that there is pinhole leak somewhere.

Anybody got a suggestion before I start replacing fuel lines?

install a rubber gas line from your fuel pump to a gas can. lightly prime the carb. i mean lightly. one it hits your pump should take over.

And pull the gas cap off too. Just in case it's not venting properly.
Does your '68 still have the vacuum wiper kind of fuel pump? Or is it a standard later model?

Rgr that, sounds like a pretty simple fix.

Its got a Edelbrock fuel pump Paul. I swapped it out just in case the pump had died but I think it is just lost prime.

And double/triple-check your selector valve (if you have dual tanks) to make sure it's not bumped into an intermediate position or something like that.
Who knows, maybe the neighbor kids were playing with the valve and it's now on the "empty" tank instead?
Worth a check.

Thought of that, and fiddled with it all morning, then bypassed the rascal and ran direct out of main tank. Ive got good flow when I lower the hose below the level of the tank, its that uphill climb along the frame rail that seems to be the stopping point.

On the subject of selector switchs and aux tanks, the '68 has always been a PITA to get any gas in the aux tank. Any attempt to fill it any faster than a trickle, it spits it right back in my face. This trucks been doing it since I bought it, and that was 36 yrs ago.

Any suggestions on aux gas fillups?

I removed the filler neck and attached a pipe fitting to the side, up near the cap, pointinf forward. Then installed a bulkhead fitting into the upper outer rear corner of the tank, attached a hose between the 2. Now I can fill about 85% as fast as the rear.

Hah! You're more patient than I was. I only let that crap slow me down for about 2 years before I'd had enough already. Hated it when it would do that.
Then again, BOTH of my tanks did it, so I didn't have a backup.

To this day though, I don't know how what I did fixed anything, but it did, so I'm not really complaining.
All I did was replace the filler and vent hoses, evap hoses (just the short sections at the tank), blew compressed air into the evap circuit to check for blocks, and put it all back together.
Even though I didn't see anything obvious when I removed the old stuff, the next time I filled up it acted almost like a normal car! Almost...

Did you test both sides of the Fuel Pump you replaced? Was it bad? Have you tested the new one?
If you think about it the fuel pump will pull fuel from the rear tank to the carb pretty fast. If you have run out of gas, put some in and prime the carb to get going again it happens pretty quickly. These pumps don’t loose their prime like a diesel. My guess is that it is sucking air somewhere or a filter is plugged. IMO use a vacuum - pressure gage to test both sides of the pump that is on the engine. If it passes then start there looking for a plugged filter, air leak etc. An unusual one I have seen was a broken pick up tube in the tank.

Paul, it got to the the point on the '68 that I dont even try to use the aux. Its plumbed and has some gas in it, but I run off main.

The '68 is a roadster and I just use it to run around town and p**s off jeeps at redlights. Four barrel edelbrock on a high rise manifold and long tube headers make the Red Rocket real quick off the line;D
