Fuel Tank rust problem.

I took off the gas tank for the frame off, and took it down to the local radiator shop and had them clean it out. Looked good inside and out there at the shop, but when I got home and lifted it up I noticed that there was some debris still shaking around in there. Not much, but enough to get me concerned.

Getting the old gas out before I took it in was an ordeal and since the liquid was hard to get out, I have no idea how I can get the rest of the leftover debris out. Thought of attaching my shop vac to the filler tube, and blowing air in from my compressor to stir the debris and suck it out. Would this work or is there a better method?

a way to get the rust out is to put a length of chain inside it and shake the daylights out of it. the rubbing actions wears it off. another option is KBS makes a very good tank lining kit that will resolve the issue for good.

i'd work the big rust off then line it.

Getting it cleaned/boiled out will not solve the rust problem. Once rust starts you have to get a new tank or buy one of the kits to "coat" the inside. POR-15 makes a good kit. I know two people that have used it and it's all good after several years. You sometimes can save a few buck by just buying just the coating and using muratic acid to clean the rust out. Auto paint stores should have the coating. Flushing the tank with lots of water should remove any left over junk in the tank.

About half a hand full of ballbearings works good to if you don't have a length of chain..

I used the por15 fuel tank repair kit, I was skeptical, but following the directions exactly, it came out great. I think everything was about $125 or so.

Thanks all for the input. So basically, for 50 bucks more than it would cost to coat the tank, I could get a new tank? Anybody have any experience with the plastic replacement tanks?

There are a few good threads concerning plastic tanks, I hit them all while I was deciding what to do with my old steel tank. I had about the slightest leak on a seam, that I was able to repair with solder. So far so good. The tank had a little corrosion in it, (im not even sure it was rust),which I cleaned up with a long wire brush and compressed air. Guess I'll wait to see how long that lasts. I know I'm due to replace it, but I'm a cheap SOB...
