Hey Guys,

I not 100% sure which way the fuel tank switch works.

Is the direction the lever is pointing the tank it uses? Or is it the small arrow opposite of the lever?

i.e If the lever is over main is it on main?

Or if the little arrow is point to main is main on?

Sorry to be so wordy.

Thanks
John

That is how mine works. Lever over Main it's on the main tank, lever over Aux it's on the aux tank.

I think the factory way is whichever way the long part of the handle points. I didn't like that so I swapped the lever around so the little arrow points to the selected tank..

Should be text on the switch plate which reads upside down, small arrow opposite the lever pointing to main = running on main tank.

I can't figure out how the long part of the handle is supposed to clear the floor when I try to switch tanks. can you help me? or can I be helped?

Flip it the other direction.
If it won't go that way, your switch may be installed upside down? Not sure if it would line up with the holes upside down, but with these things, we often find that anything, even the impossible, is possible. And often the impossible seems to be accomplished by the clever PO's!

Mine used the small pointer to indicate the tank. The handle always pointed opposite the direction that the dash selector switch for the gauges pointed.

Your switch is installed upside down. It should only rotate 180 degrees total and the arc swings up toward the roof of the cab. I've put one in upside down before and had the same problem you do. Couldn't switch tanks because the handle hit the floor.

And remember all these answers go out the window if the previous owner happened to reverse the fuel lines that feed the valve.

I was making a joke at my expense. I was expecting someone to say "flip it the other way dummy".

Too late. We already said "Pull For Heat" this year. So nobody thinks "dummy" is appropriate to attach when replying to something they know only because they did it themselves at one time!
Besides, in this crowd there's not just a few out there that were ready to describe to you in detail how to notch the floor in a half-circle to clear the custom switch installation while still remaining weather resistant and patching rust at the same time!

If your gauges are working you can run one tank to see which runs out. Thats what I did, and for my Bronco the arrow is the indicator not the lever.
