Ok just picked up some full width axles outta a 79 bronco for $300 and hopefully in a few weeks the transformation will be complete. I'm also shooting for 40's to roll on. Wish me luck

with the 79bronco axel your not moving the wedges..... so you either bowing the spring or making a mount for them to move under the upper perches?

I just re-drilled the lower mounts offset the other way , and the springs angled up to the towers like it was made for it.
I was going to move the uppers out , but it's been working well for about 4 years now.

I think I'll probably just leave them there:D

Also Look in my gallery for what I did...

It's to late for this but I would really suggest getting a dana60..

I ran 39's with my dana44 and never broke anything but I babbyed it.

Thx guys. Lots of great info. I was thinking of either new coil buckets or putting a new perch on the bottom. I will do some research, still have to clean the others. Thx

Good time to get the long arms. I assume you got the hp front end 44 witht the double caliper disks? I love mine.

Nice reinforcements on the weld on arms! I also inset the lower mounts but this is on a 90's HPD60. I welded on some heavy angle to the inside of the weld on brackets and reinforced them.

As for 40's on a D44? No way that will work out on the trail! I ran 38's for years on a D44 all beefed up and worked ok but the second I would back up a hill with the wheel turned (weight on front tires), it would walk the u-joints out and break the ears off. This was guaranteed breakage everytime.
The 9" would pop the bearing off the axle shaft simply turning around. %)
After spending tons of cash on the D44 and 9" I realized I could have gotten 1 ton running gear... Needless to say, I sold off the D44 and 9" for a good chunck of change and got a HPD60/D70 set up. No issues since!

I would have loved to put a 60 up front, I have a rear but couldn't find any fronts for less than $1200. I like the 44hp because of weight and ground clearance. This is a big upgrade for me especially since I've been running a 30 welded with cut 37's and I've keep it together. So I can upgrade from here if it doesn't work. It's hard to build a rig for both mud and rocks

Great pics. I was looking at mine today after I pressure washed them and leaning toward moving the lower buckets in too. It seems to be the simple thing to do. Thx for the info. Just picked up the 40" ground hawgs, they are getting the knife tomorrow, hopefully
