when replacing fuel line do you run straight rubber line from the tank all the way to the fuel pump? or, do you replace the smaller plastic line that the rubber line plugs in to. not sure how brittle the plastic gets. seems like all rubber would be better.

Rubber lines should only be used in the few short pieces where movement could be expected. Tank to frame, frame to selector valve, and frame to fuel pump.
The only exception is the piece of rubber hose that goes to the carburetor, and that's debatable. That little piece of rubber hose has caused a lot of engine fires.

Rubber hose degrades too quickly to use for the main runs where heat can be expected. The good stuff is also pretty expensive.
Some use braided fuel injection line, but it's sort of expensive and not necessary for a carbureted engine.
Steel fuel line can be fabricated very easily, to replace that nylon fuel line.

I'm curious, what years used nylon fuel line? My '77 came with steel lines.

I could also argue that most of the leaks also occur at the junction of the rubber to hard line.

Good rubber hose has an impermeable barrier on the inside. That is not your basic auto parts store fuel hose. I've been using USCG approved hose for the low pressure stuff. Earls vapor guard EFI hose for the EFI stuff. Stuff is not cheap. I use metal lines for the bulk of my runs, rubber as needed.

That black nylon line used from factory is great stuff and I use that almost exclusively on all my builds, not just EBs. It's available in rolls from McMaster Carr and other places.

As already mentioned, keep the use of rubber hose to an absolute minimum. In fact..I never use it all any more except for Aeroquip stainless braided. Where I need flexible hose connections otherwise, I use the grey synthetic USCG-approved UV and ethanol resistance marine fuel line.

The few instances where I do run any metal lines, I used to always use stainless tubing. But nowadays I use the CuNi tubing...cheaper, more flexible and still just as corrosion resistant as the stainless.

I bought Gates Barricade to run my lines. EFI clamps and the Ford fittings for the ends. I haven't installed any of it yet.

Rubber is about the worst thing to use for fuel lines. New hard nylon is probably the best because it will never degrade, like rubber & metals will. And it's easy to bend away from the hot areas without tools. But if you need to make an area that will allow movement (like before & after a filter), just use a heat gun to make a loop or U-bend a few inches back. If you push it onto an appropriate barb, clamps are not needed, even for EFI pressure.

My black plastic/nylon line was only used where it passes under the driver's side exhaust manifold to resist vapor lock. I'm realy glad to know I can get more. Thanks bmc69.
