Goodyear MT/R vs BFG KM2

I am trying to decide between these two sets of tires. Which would you choose (select in poll above), and why?

I am looking for a a tire that serves a multi-purpose roll (no pun intended). Not a whole lot of miles, maybe 2-3k per year on road. And a couple wheeling trips per year.

Thanks!

Eric

not a goodyear fan no particular reason, so choose bfg. And to mix it up I think my next tire is going to be the cooper sst pro, another option to consider.

BFG KM2's wear like iron when rotated properly. They are quiet, good looking, and great on wet roads.

I voted for the MTR's - I have them on 2 Broncos - but for what you describe as your use I would also consider Duratracs. They are quieter on the road than either the KM2s or MTRs and more aggressive than the KO2's.

For all around use, I'd lean towards the BFGs.. Have the MTRs, but mostly for off road

%)%)%) I ran the BFG's but after a couple years they get hard and on the road they will come lose. I do have a heavy right foot and they can fry in second and 3rd. on the street. I run a 351W 4V,4 speed top loader and 33.12.50X15's so I don't like them on the street good luck with your choice.:D:D:D Bill ;D:D%)

A note on the coopers. Years back I had the Futura 33"at's. They're pep boys version of the cooper made by cooper. Something hit the sidewall rolling down the street and it sliced like butter. Never even felt it hit. After that I swapped to bfgs

Dude, get out of here with that mess because you don't know what you're talking about. You bought a cheap no name tire and that is in no way related to a high quality tire like the STT Pro. The STT Pro has ARMOR-TEK3 which is a tough 3 ply carcass. "They were made by Cooper" has nothing to do with it, Cooper makes a LOT of brands of tires to those brands specification. You even said "years back" so once again, has nothing to do with a new high quality tire made now.

Okay Eric, you can have your thread back now. I have a set of MT/Rs I can't wait to run this fall so interested to know what the reviews are.

Don't know about the sst model but the at is the same tire. When I bought the 33s I was also looking into 35s. The 33 is Futura and the 35 is labeled cooper. Same exact tire with identical stats. No different than buying "summit brand parts. All .are made by their vendors such as edelbrock without the name on it. Now both broncos are on 35"bfgs.

BFG all the way. Been cool since I put them on mine in '79 and probably always will be.

Not familiar with MT/R so looked them up. Not directional, but asymmetrical makes a goofy tread pattern to me. They are marked "inside" and "outside" so that means white letters out. White letters out was cool in the '70's. Now not so much.

MTRs are blackwall...

I bought KM2s, because, at the time, they seemed to be the most highly thought of tire here on this board. Since I bought mine, I had a friend have two of them come apart on his DD Superduty causing about $3K worth of damage each time. He's now running MTRs, both on his Superduty and his Bronco.

I've also had two of my KM2s replace under warranty because of what I will assume is a separated ply. I'm getting ready to pursue having the other two replaced for the same reason.

If I were to buy tires today, I'd probably buy MTRs.

That's interesting, I read a review where someone had 4 tires go bad for the same reason.

I had the older version(BF Goodrich Mud-Terrain T/A) of the KM2's on three of my rigs bronco ,dodge diesel, and ford 3/4 HD and was happy with them, only complaint was once they started to wear they seemed to wear fast. I put the Duratracs on my dodge diesel last year, and really like them ,so I put them on my 74 bronco, and so far really happy with their performance.so I guess my vote is KM2's ;D.

The research I did shows the goodyears are probably more durable (damage resistant) but they don't wear or ride as good as the BFGs.

With such low anual mileage you will suffer from rubber aging before you have wear issues with either. Will you be on the road enough to get the benifits of a better rolling tire? It is a toss up, I would normally do the BFGs, but might lean a little more toward the Goodyears in this case. Both are good choices, probably be shopping price and warranty as well.

If you're doing 2-3K per year, get the MT/Rs. They will only last about 30K and are more expensive, BUT they are a superior tread pattern. This is coming from a die hard BFG fan who has own KM2s.

BETTER YET THOUGH: Look at the KO2's. I was ready to swear off BFG after owning KM2s, KOs, and KMs etc. The wet traction performance is poor. However I decide to try a set of the KO2s because the reviews were so good. BFG really stepped up their game and wet traction is much better. My Bronco is more sure-footed in rain, snow and ice than any of my other 4 vehicles.

I rolled some BFG's on my f-150 and had sour luck with em. 3 sidewall failures in a short time. I could only get 1 covered under warranty. After that I swore them off and gave em away. . . . .
Lots of my Bronco brethren locally swear by em, but I can't bring myself to try them again after my bad luck.
I bought the Cooper STT on a whim, and love em. put em through the Rubicon twice, been through Moab, lots of rocks and woods locally, and have had great luck. have about 15k miles on the set and when they are gone I am going for the STT Pro.
Just my $.02

There seem to be a lot of separation/tread issues with the KM2's. I ordered 35x12.5r15 MT/R's tonight. They should be here Friday!

Feel free to keep the opinions coming.

MTR Kevlars for me. I run them and you couldn't give me a set of the non Kevlar ones....goofy looking tread or not, they bite. Not good on ice, but excellent in all other conditions including the street.

I don't run the newe BFG's although I probably put well over 100,000 miles on BFG M/T's over the decades but that's not the tire your asking about.
