Temp sending unit is (should be) at the drivers side front of the intake manifold. If you find it plugged in, take it off, and short it to ground. The temp gauge should peg. If that happens, more than likely, it's a bad sending unit. If not, check back here! ;D
don't leave it grounded to long or it will burn up gauge.to test:by your self, get a wire with alligator clips both ends, hook one side to ground other end to wire to gauge.turn ign sw to on and see what gauge does.if it pegs turn key off right a way.sender is bad.
I think I have the same problem.... temperature gauge is not working. If I do as you all say above and find out that the sending unit is bad, is that something that I can get at a local auto parts store, or is it some kind of specialty item I would have to order? Thanks.

If you get it from a parts store they will often ask "is it for a light or a gauge?" tell them gauge. If the engine is not original, don't worry. Get a sending unit for the same as the truck, don't worry about the year of the engine. You want the sending unit to match the gauge.
