I have been looking into diesel swaps. Seems like one of the least expensive options would be a 2.2 from a 8ps or 90s Benz. I just dont know much about which trans to use or why I would need to do to get more power out of it. I am sure it is very possile though

Someone on here did do a Benz diesel swap. I do not remember the details...

How well is this motor supported, and how much do parts for it cost?

We had a guy locally try to do this swap, tried to find a guy to do the swap for him... Purchased a donor vehicle and the end result was he went back to a 5.0L.

I thought the one that was swapped was only 2WD, no attempt to put a transfer case on.

I don't think there is a lot of transmission options. Maybe something like a Toyota 5-speed?

I have looked for a friend and Cummings has the R2.8 crate engine; 161HP/310lbft torque that comes with everything for 9K...

Diesel swaps are a lot of fun. The Cummins is by far the most documented swap and many have successful rigs they drive daily. With that said if there is a will there’s a way. I looked into many different diesels before starting my swap I’m doing now. I liked a couple different Mercedes engines but I had a hard time figuring out the rest of the drivetrain situation if I went that route. I ended up going with a fairly common motor that has been swapped into a lot of Toyota’s but quite a few broncos. I’m not afraid of fab work and and can make any parts that are needed. If you don’t have some sort of aftermarket adapter support for drivetrain components or the ability and imagination required to make them yourself then it may be a very tough road to get it running and driving reliably.

I don’t say that crush your spirits or to dissuade you in any way. I’m am constantly impressed with the solutions and creativity I see on this site daily. If you want a bronco with a 2.2 get after it and see what you come up with. Everyone on here I’m sure will be watching and will help any way they can. I know I would.
