Has anyone done an AX15 Swap w/o body lift?

The motor, transmission and transfer case is out of the Bronco and sitting in my garage while it is off being painted. (Actually, the motor is off being rebuilt). While it has been gone, I've been thinking about doing the AX15 swap. Everything i have read said it's a lot easier with the 1" body lift. The body shop has already done the alignment for doors, etc. so i don't want to do the lift. Considering we pulled the motor and transmission together, can I not just bolt the AX15 up and drop it back in? Why do you need the body lift?

I swapped in an NV3550 behind an installed 351 Windsor without any body lift with no issues. Trannies are very similar to my understanding. I did make a larger cutout on the side/top of the tunnel in the floor than what was there with the 3 speed.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I don’t have a problem with a larger hole.

i just finished my swap, body still on the frame, no body lift and have about 3/4"-1" clearance everywhere. its snug but definitely do able. The dana 20 adapter has 3 different clocking positions i believe. i think i used the middle one and it still fit.
