Has anyone eliminated the smog pump on a serp. 5.0 HO ?

I've had a bad noise coming from my alternator or smog pump lately. It turned out to the bearing in the alternator so I put in a new one.
I don't use the smog pump so it is just an idler. Do they make a real idler to replace it or can I just eliminate it and get a shorter belt?
The concern with eliminating the smog pump is that the belt will do a 180 around the alternator. Is this to much? The alternator pully is pretty small, about 2".
Thanks

smog pump

there is a smog pump elimination kit and i think ford has one
it bolts onto the engine where the smog pump bolts on
also they did make mustangs w/o smog pumps
if the belt goes 180 around the alt it is not a bad thing cause there is less chance of slipage

SecondChance just eliminated it on his 5.8 and got a shorter belt. If I recall right we routed it a little different from the stock routing so it would fit better.

The first one is approx. how we did my brothers (mentioned above). The only difference is that we also eliminated the AC pump as well on his. (The PS pump doesn't sit quite as low as the pics show)

So my ps pump is up near way the ac compressor was, much like the picture with the red belt.

Rmain101, i don't want to steal this thread but perhaps in another thread you could provide more pictures of your engine compartment. it looks good. i'd love to know what all you've used/done. harness, cold air return, fuel line, radiator? that is if you don't mind sharing. thanks.

Thanks for the ideas.
I think I will reroute the belt as in the first pic. I kept my AC compressor and converted it to onboard air.

Next time she looks over your shoulder pull up at a porno site instead. After that she won't complain about all the time you spend on classicbroncos. ;D
