She's cleaning up surprisingly well!

I decided to stop wallowing and start cleaning her up. She is cleaning up better than I expected, which is encouraging! :) A lot of work ahead, but it felt good to get out there and spend some time with her.

I'm heading down to Sunnyvale next weekend to observe some gurus doing an EFI install. While it will be difficult to be without my rig, it will be great to learn something and to meet some Bay Area bronco folks.

Man, sorry to hear about your problems. That is my worst fear, especially when I hear a fuse blow in the glovebox......

$hitty deal, but it at least looks pretty good after the initial clean up. A good sign that it will all be good again someday.

Like others have said.........& I agree! Did you smell gas when you were driving it? I remember once years ago my wife and I were driving from town and she convinced me that the smell of gas was stronger than normal...(Old Broncos have all kind of smells in the cab usually.) When I finally pulled over, gasoline was puddled in the intake and all around the distributor. The short rubber hose that connects the steel line to the screw in filter on the carb was spraying gas....I guess it wasn't tight enough! I can't believe it didn't ignite.

Then just the other day, I was driving a Bronco with the hood off, and at start up, I noticed a fine stream of gasoline spraying from the rubber fuel line between the filter and steel line (same place as the other Bronco years ago). I quickly shut it off, and replaced the dryrotted line.

Indeed I did. I'm pretty certain that the glass fuel filter broke and sprayed fuel on the distributor. When I had the last tune-up done, the speed shop replaced the plastic filter with a glass one (and not by my request). It wasn't wrapped or otherwise protected. It was my first rig, and not being a car guy, I didn't know any better. Lesson learned (big time!).

When I got back to my house after the fire, I found small, thick pieces of clear glass sprinkled on the ground underneath where my engine would have been. And a liquid stain trail on the ground following the route I backed up and left the parking space. The fuel filter was positioned right next to the distributor, which was ground zero for the fire.

I have heard of those breaking....I know I have one Bronco with one on it.....I probably should change it!!!
How far did you go from your drive to where the fire happened?

That section of hose needs to be new pretty much all the time. Seems like as soon as it gets age on it, it starts leaking.

My buddy and I both live near to the freeway, so the trip was 25 miles of traffic-free freeway driving. When I left my buddy's house, I was immediately stuck in stop-n-go traffic, and up it went.

I am definitely going with a plastic fuel filter when I get her fixed up.

This is the reason I want to put the hood shocks on the hood. God forbid something catches fire underneath and your fumbling with the hood support.

Glad your OK. She's fixable.

I have a couple of EB buddies that want to join and can't register either. I think Delta 4 Wheel (the adim) has it locked down because recently there's been a huge spamming problem. I pm'd Delta yesterday to see how my buddies could register. When I find out I'll pm you.

So, how's your rebuild going? ?:?

Hasn't started yet, really. I cleaned up the outside to get off the fire extinguisher residue (minus the hood, since it needs to be stripped down and repainted anyway). About to go to Home Depot to get a wet/dry vacuum so I can start cleaning the inside, and get the water out of the carpets.

The rebuild can't start until I find a job and/or get an insurance check, so it will take some time. Thanks for checking in though!

If not plastic get yourself a Fram steel filter, wont crack or melt.

Man I really feel for ya. This is my 1st post and recent 68' bronco purchase has me stoked! I live down in sb but If you need any help fora weekend from a certified mech.lemme know, I'll haul oats up there w my tools. How does the wiring look? Any pics? Have you done any cleaning or located the source ?I had a fire in my 49' century ( wood boat) right after resto and the engine cover blew so hard it shot my gf into the air and over the side of the damn thing. I fought that fire knowing in the back of my mind if the varnish catches it was goin to Davey jones locker, and how much that boat meant to me and my family. The last puff of fire ext got it knocked out luckily but I had to replace the whole interior. Soot me a pm if you want some help and want to send a couple pics to me.

That is very nice of you, thank you. And I'm very sorry to hear about your boat fire. I'm glad to hear that everyone was ok.

I'll separate my responses to your questions one by one, for readability:

Source of the fire: I've never worked on cars before, so it is hard for me to diagnose the problem. The rig is also inoperable right now, so I can't easily get it somewhere for a mechanic to look it over. Ground zero of the fire was the distributor cap. I was thinking that the glass fuel filter broke, because when I got back to my parking spot after the fire, there were bits of thick, clear glass sprinkled on the ground underneath where my engine would have been. Also a thin stain trail on the pavement following the route I backed up and left my parking spot. Other forum members have shared their opinion that it was a faulty or decayed fuel line. That is all I can tell you.

Cleaning: I've cleaned up the inside of the rig and most of the exterior. No work done on the hood or engine bay. I live in an apartment building, so I can't really do anything that would involve pressure washing or chemicals as there are no drains in the community garage. I did use my wet/dry shop vac as a blower to try and get a bunch of the extinguisher residue off of the grill, etc., but it sent a massive cloud into the air, and since it was a nice day, and people had their windows and patio doors open, I decided to stop that pretty quick.

Wiring: Battery and cables look like they may be salvageable. Spark plug wires are toast, as is all the other wiring. Blaster coil, etc. are all toast. The fire spread under the dash, so some of the knobs on the dash melted, as did the stereo. It will need a new harness, probably new switches in the dash, stereo rewire.

Pics: There are a few pics at the top of this thread. I'll try to send you some via PM/email.

In regards to your offer to help, I may just take you up on that at some point. There are a few locals on the NorCal Broncos forum and on here that have offered to help as well. At some point in the future when I have some funds to put towards this, it would be great to coordinate a time to get everyone together. The tricky part is that I'll need to find someone local to lend me a space in their shop for the weekend, as there isn't space or much I would be allowed to do here in the apartment complex.

Thank you very much again for your offer to help. I'll get you some pics.
