I got the heater core from Tom's on my doorstep yesterday. It looks like an exact match as the old one on my '66. The old one was the origional core with the ford stamping on it. The only difference is the tubes are longer than my stock. One of the guys at Tom's warned me he had to cut the tubes shorter when he did his rebuild. That and he warned me his smelled like rattlecan paint for awhile after the rebuild.;D I havent installed the new core yet but because the dimensions are the same as the old it should'nt be a problem. Thanks for the inspiration to rebuild mine SC.;)

What have you guys used to attatch the foam seals to the heater box flaps? I was wondering if the 3M high stength spray on adhesive would work. Or is there something better to use? Thanks for any help.

SC how did the autozone core look when compared to your old one? did it look like an exact match or were your inlet and outlet tubes different in any way?

I am about to buy the autozone core and would like to know this also.Anyone know ??

I like the idea of a higher volume fan.

When I lived in Idaho, it would get cold in the winter (likely still does). I would use a piece of plexiglas and cover the intake vent on the hood by sandwiching the hood between the plexi and fender washers. I then pulled the boot between the heater core and the kick panel. This helped a bunch as it would act like a "recycle" like most autos have now. Is anyone making a flapper valve that can be inserted in place of the boot so that you have the choice of outside "fresh" air or inside "warm" air? Maybe with the better blower it wouldn't be needed, but a soft top in an Idaho winter needed all the help it could get.

That's your resistor to control fan speed.
  • Fan on high = direct current
  • Fan on low = current through resistor

I think I may have got this in backwards? What I mean is I hooked the wires up just like they came out,but I may have turned the resistor around when I put it back to the box.Now the fan only blows on high and the fan motor gets REAL HOT!! OUCH.The ends looked like they would go to either plugin.I hate to pull that box back out,but if if's gonna burn up my motor. well here I go again.:p

In now way would that matter. Its just a coil of wire, no direction to the current i dont think.

Well I went back two different times this afternoon and the switch worked fine on low and hi?(go figure) I don't about the fan motor getting so hot as I did not let it run to long either time. Do you know why the fan motor would get so hot ?
Thanks for the info,Gene

Too small of ground maybe? Im not sure. If you got the bigger motor then i have heard you may need to go to a bigger, better ground. Check next time and see if the ground wire is hot. Id like to hear some other input about the factory wiring system holding up to the larger moter!

Wanted to provide an update on this thread apparently part # 35334 is a replacement/cross reference piece for the delphi blower. Reason for the update is 35334 is only $25 at advance, I'm getting ready to redo my box so I'll post up if it doesn't work but everything I've found says it should.

Guys, I just removed my heater box tonight as the first steps to replacing a leaking heater core and upgrading the blower motor and cage as per this thread. One thing I can't figure out is that of the 3 dash knobs, the "Temp Control" knob wasn't connected to anything, and I don't see a place for it to go.

All three knobs have the cables that slide in and out and all look the same. My heater box only has two gate valves or whatever you want to call it to hook the sliders up to. Any help on where the third temp control goes?

Pics attached, from what I can tell they look exactly like the ones posted at the beginning of the thread!

Thanks in advance.

.

It attaches to the valve on your heater hoses running to the heater core
It should be right above the valve covers on the back passenger side.

Hmm, I'll have to go out and have a look. So that slider for temp control actually connects to the hoses themselves and not the heater box?

The shiny looking part in the pic.

So does that valve bolt to anything? This issue has been driving me nuts, so great timing.

It looks like in your pic it is bolted to the valve cover or some sort of bracket but most I've seen seem to just free float...

Help, or any other pics?

It just gets clamped to both hoses and sits there. You are seeing the clamp. It just rests on the valve cover.

Success

This past weekend I did the complete heater rebuild just as this thread described and it was a COMPLETE SUCCESS. Great heat and great air flow. My heater hose valve is just as described in the recent posts. It just floats there on top of the rear of the passenger valve cover. PDQ, good luck with your project.

Blue, call me an idiot, but I can't seem to figure your picture out. What exactly am I looking at and where was it taken?

I'm pretty sure I am missing that valve. My heater hoses were tied together bypassing the core when I got it. There is a ~3/4" diameter hole in the firewall right behind the passenger side valve cover. I'm guessing that's how all the hoses were run?

The hole in my firewall is on the very upper left side of the photo, just outside of the photo....
