You're right. Many (all?) of them had an extension tube that went pretty far down into the manifold.
VERY common for the old ones to deteriorate to the point that they leak or break all on their own, without any external help from wrenches. Sounds like yours was well on it's way.
Good luck. Oh, and start soaking the snot out of it with some penetrant.
