I recently bought a 1969 Bronco and the previous owner said it had a 351c swap, I'm not too familiar with Fords so I have no idea how to tell what it is, any ideas?

Count the number of valve cover bolts. The 351c will have 8. Another "easy to spot" feature is the stat housing. On the 351c it comes straight out the top of the block itself, and not the intake manifold like it does on 301 and 351w.

The 351 Cleveland's radiator hose attaches to the radiator and connects directly into the front of the engine block. It makes a 90° bend from the radiator to the engine block.

The 351 Windsor's radiator hose attaches to the radiator and connects directly to the front of the intake manifold via a water neck.

Well I see Bill beat me to it ...

If you still have the mechanical fuel pump the mounting bolts on a Cleveland are vertical and the Windors are horizontal.

And many an "M" has been pawned off as a "C" over the years, so it could be one of those as well.
However, even though there were a lot of 351M's running around, more than a few 351C's found their way into Broncos.

good luck deciphering the clues.

True..but swapping a "351M" in to an EB is a lot more involved than swapping in a "351C". The latter is little different than a 351w swap. The former...I've not seen done (unless you count the 400 swaps...;))

Who can tell the difference, externally, between a 351M and a 400 anyway?

Maybe I've been tainted by the experience but I once went to look at a set of "4V 351C heads with Titanium valves" that a guy had for sale. They were C9OE 351W heads with Stainless valves. Yeah, I bought them, but not near at his asking price! Still have them actually...

Anyway, it seems like anyone with 351 parts or engines (particularly when for sale) always assumes that they're Cleveland stuff.

So Bill, how do you identify a 351M from a 400 by just looking at the engines?

Sorry, trick question. %)

I have a special machine in my machine shop. It's magic..every 351m engine that enters my shop leaves as a 400.

Did anyone mention how to tell the difference between a 351C and a 351M or 400?
I know the Cleveland uses the same bellhousing , starter and motor mounts as the "Windsor" motors . Are there other external differences to distinguish it from the M and the 400?
