So I took my car to get inspected. He wanted me to add a Neutral/Saftey switch. No big deal. I'll just run two wires up from the B&M light truck megashifter and splice them into the purple wires on my newer painless harness (not the newest one). The purple wire that goes from the ignition switch to the "s" side of the starter solenoid. Now it only starts in Park/Neutral. Problem solved. Or so I thought.

I noticed later that my brand new Autometer Phantom II electric speedometer wasn't working. All my other gauges worked. I made sure my gauge was hooked up right. I checked all the grounds, I had power to the gauge, power back at the 3 wire ford VSS, replaced the speedo gear. Hooked a drill to the back of the D20 and got a reading on the gauge. (With the key on, but not running). So at least that tells me my square wave signal works and my gears aren't slipping. So I figured it was power related.

And today I finally remembered about the NSS and screwed around with that. I rigged a relay close to the starter solenoid using the purple wire and got the speedo to read mileage when it was running. But before I had anymore time to mess around with things, it was dark out, and no garage for me. :-( I have read that the ignition can have problems giving power at start up sometimes??? I just thought it was weird that it was only effecting the speedometer. I have a 94 5.0 and the PO really butchered up the engine wiring. He had two relays hooked up, one for the EEC and one for the fuel pump. Nothing for the HEGO's or anything else, so to say the least it doesn't run perfect. But the speedo did work before the NSS.

So I guess my questions are. Has anyone else encountered this before? Should I just run a bigger gauge wire from my ignition switch to the NSS, and then NSS to starter solenoid? Will using a relay be ok? or is there another way to do it?? Just looking for a fix that is temporary, but safe. I was hoping ryan's 94/95 harness would be ready soon, but I'll prolly just switch over to the 88-93 setup once I have the funds. I really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

I tried to put all the info somebody might need to help, and just as I sent it, I forgot something. The speedometer does have buffered vss output signal, but I'm not using that. The computer isn't involved at all, and the -VSS is grounded for the eec.
