help w/ f250 master cylinder

can anyone tell me how to get the brake rod out of the old master cylinder and into the new one? i removed the clip and assembly. my old one is a 1" bore and the new one is a 1 1/16" bore from a 77 f250. i can't figure out how to get that darn rod out and into the new one. please help. i have pictures i just can't figure out how to add them to this post

There's a clip that fits around the end of the rod and into piston. The only way I've been able to get them out is to pull really hard. The clip on the outside keeps the piston in the bore.
