Holley or Edelbrock carb?

Going onto a stock 94 5.0. Thw current Holley is a 670 which doesn’t seem to like me right now. Trans is a c4.

Just want a carb that doesn’t dump fuel and runs reliably around town and Offroad.

I have access to rebuilt units for both Holley ($400) and Edelbrock ($270). Both are available as 600cfm. I can also get the Edelbrock in 500cfm.

No interest in the Qjet as I’ll have to change I take again and that’s a non-starter.

I’ve heard the Edelbrock is a set it and forget it. Holley is a timeless classic.

Any strong opinions or pushes towards one vs the other?

I think the opinions you'll get are a mixed bag. I swapped from holley truck avenger to a 500cfm Edelbrock on my mild build 302 for 6 years ago and have been really happy with it, both on and off road. As long as you regulate the fuel pressure to 5 psi, I've had zero issues with my Edelbrock. I don't do any hardcore rock crawling, light/moderate offroad and lots of onroad it does great. I like how easy they are to service/clean and tuning them is fairly simple if you follow their chart that comes with the tuning kits.

Yep, if your wanting track or offroad performance, tune a Holley and get what you want. But if you spend most of your time around town, nothing beats the Edelbrock AVS2 for out of the box idle and operation. I have a 365hp 302 and it had a nice Holley. I tuned it and it was great. But, it had a bit of a hesitation at quick throttle that I absolutely could not jet or tune out of it. Probably operator error, but it should not be that hard. Switched to the Edel 600 AVS2 carb and all good. Idles sweet, instant accel, and it was near perfect right out of the box. All my linkage transferred over as well with only minor mods.

I’m going to check to see if I blew the power valve on this thing before I swipe the cc on another carb.

Should run fine now that I have timing dialed in…but it’s not getting fuel again. It was a used carb that worked. Just tired of dealing with it and leaning towards something new to start fresh.

I ran an Edelbrock for about 5 years and had issues with it idling, especially at traffic lights when in gear. Was constantly adjusting it depending on the temperatures outside. Swapped to a Holley about 6 months ago and couldn’t be happier. Idles great and no adjustments needed this far! 🤞

I've had hits and misses both ways. New has worked better then used every time. When you have access to rebuilt... That worries me.
Holley has worked better for me in general. Edelbrock had intermittent issues at idle. Picked up a wide band recently, working on piecing together a carbed engine. I wonder if I can actually tune it halfway decent this time.

I have a holley truck avenger 470 that had about 10k miles on it before I rebuilt it (Holley kit) if interested. It ran very well on my factory 302

I have been running a 500 cfm AVS2 for 5 years and love it. I had flooding issues with my old Holley 570 street avenger. No issues since changing to Edelbrock.

I agree with Yeller, for out of the box ready to go I say the Edelbrock. I have had a few on street broncos and they work really well right out of the box. The Holleys have been ok. I have had a few different Holleys on my 67 the one that on there now is a Holley Truck avenger 470. Its been pretty good over all and was better than the Edlebrock off road but I have always had a wired hesitation under load with this carb, I changed springs in it, adjusted the secondaries and it still has a hesitation, if I give it more fuel or back off the throttle a little it goes away. Its not terrible and never has caused the truck to stall just some hesitation. Its been on the truck for at least 15 years so I guess it doesnt bother me much!
I had a stock Motorcraft 2 barrel and it was a PITA. Yes I know they can be good off road but it was worn out, never could get the choke right and still would flood when off camber. I know they can be built to work well but if you just want to bolt it on and go I wouldnt recommend it!

FWIW, don't need to change the intake to run a Q-Jet, just need to run an adapter. Which is a hit on overall height of the carb and might kill the idea anyway.

Frankly I think the best low pressure fueler uses a 7747 ECU. If you're under 300 HP they're stupid simple and reliable. If you're over 300 HP then don't bother.
