I have a manual choke on my Bronco, and it's been disconnected forever. Consequently, it ran like crap when cold. I just didn't realize how crappy "crap" was until I fixed it. Well, needless to say, it's like I'm driving a new Bronco now. About 8 months ago I ordered a choke adjustment nut, then promptly lost it. While working on one of my boat motors this weekend, I found it again (the thing cost me $10, which isn't spendy, but the thought of spending another $10 on something I already had just burned me, so I lived with it).

You'll see in the before pic that the choke cable is disconnected, and the riser is not connected to the choke plate. The after picture shows it all hooked up. The 'riser' (I don't know the technical name) had threads about halfway down, which meant I needed to cut new threads to get that adjustment nut down far enough to give me the play I needed in the cable.

All in all, well worth the time and effort, feels brand new now.

:) sometimes auto makers put things there for a reason - :) glad it's running better . It makes driving these things more fun -which is what it's all about.

Now drive, drive, drive that thing!

Wait until you do an EFI conversion - they run amazing in the cold.

EFI is just a fad - you know like the internet was back in the 90s!

Don't let the carbs know I love EFI it may hurt their feelings!

Boy, does it ever! I wanted to drive it last night, but it was dark and pouring down rain, and those 4-drum brakes SUCK in wet weather. Disc brakes coming this summer though...

So how's your cold idle adjustment? That screw that sits on a cam plate on the linkage thingy there. Get that dialed in and you're really lovin life. :-*

You're talking about on the choke-cable side of the carburetor, right? I have no idea how to set that, honestly, and was having trouble finding information online.

I set the cold idle, which makes it run great, but as I start to push the choke in it starts to, we'll, choke! Time to adjust the carb properly and set the timing, I think it'll be great after that.

...but as I start to push the choke in it starts to, we'll, choke!

When you say "push in" do you mean close it for starting? Or open it back up after it's running?
If closing, then you can easily close it too much. It'll fire right up usually, but then it'll just start to burble and, like you said, choke. It's a little dance you have to do with manual chokes. Not all of them have a limiter to keep it from closing all the way, and you should leave a little opening at the top even in the coldest conditions.

But it's manual after all, so you just push in a little more until it cleans up and then run it open a little bit more at a time, when it's ready.
Just takes some finesse and practice with listening to what the engine needs.

If yours does have a stop, simply set it so that leaves that last gap open. There is a specification for automatic chokes, of about 3/8" (total guess) or so. Maybe there's one for a manual choke too?

If you did mean it chokes off when you start to open it up, then it sounds like you're running a bit lean, or it's just being cold-blooded and needs more warmth to burn the fuel right. That could be a result of many things, including oddly enough, a weak ignition spark.

Have fun!
