hello guys. im about to start my rear disc conversion, and have a question. i already have a set of weld on race car brackets and loaded Monte Carlo front calipers, and need to pick a rotor. seems there are a lot of varying ideas on what rotor to use. i wont be using an Ebrake setup. what rotor should i use and why? should i run them in front of the axle flange or behind it? i have cheap machine shop access and can have the axle flanges turned down no problem. are the rear lincoln rotors 5 on 5.5 or will i need a set re-drilled to that bolt pattern? if at all possible, i would rather go with a small-ish rear rotor and not use the same as the front so i can possibly get away without running a proportioning valve (just trying to keep costs down).

thanks for the help guys. :)

I think the concenus on the rotor is the CJ-7. It has teh right bolt pattern. You wil need to have it machined if you have stock axles. SOme after market axles don't requie machining of the rotor. I think weather you mount it inside or out side depends on where you mount the bracket. I have seen it done both ways but the bracket I used required me to mount it on the inside of the axle.

i will need to have the rotor machined? or the axles? i was under the impression that the axle flange had to be turned down in order to fit in the rotor hat...

thanks for the info guys. looks like CJ7 rotors it is.

You can do it either way. I turned the axle but you can turn the rotors as well. I felt the axle had more area to give. One problem with my method is that if I break an axle then I have to carry a spare for each side that is turned as well.

check out my web page for more details and pics of my rear disk upgrade. I have a link under tech and then under the reference section I have a posting of all the e-mail I save that had rear disk infor in them. It's not easy to read becasue there is not order but there is a tone of info in there.

I used 88 up gm 4wd front rotors and re drilled the pattern. No machining required, slips right over your axle. Can buy them new for $35-40 each. Brett

What did you use for calipers and mounting brackets. Are you also a member of the colorado4x4.org board, cuase I remeber reading on the board someone else was doing the same conversion with a Ford 9" and 4x4 GM rotors

thanks for the links guys. i picked up a set of the CJ7's @ Napa yesterday. looks like i will have a grand total of $64 in this rear disc swap. 8)

Monte Carlo calipers loaded and race car brackets- free from dirt tracker buddy

CJ7 rotors new- $44

getting both axles machined from "sponsor shop"- $20

this has been the coolest disc swap ever. for less than $100, i have an all new disc conversion and a 30pak of Budweiser in the fridge for install purposes, with money left over for even more beer. ;D
