Hood Scoop install

I'm going to put the scoop on today, I'm concerned about hitting a brace under the hood with one of the bolts. Is this something I need to worry about?

When it's time to cut the hole for the air cleaner what is the best way to mark the hood? I have thought about making a cardboard circle or some foam around the air cleaner and coating the top with some paint and closing the hood to leave a mark.

Any help appreciated.
I'll post some pic's of the scoop and such when it gets light here

Thanks

When I cut my hood for a scoop I put some goo (I think I used silicone) on a piece of cardboard and fastened that to the carb bolt. Then I lowered the hood until the goo hit. I figured this was close enough to the center of the carb (assuming your engine is centered). Then I used a self taping screw at that mark and screwed it in from the top. Then took a piece of string 1/2 of the size of the hole I wanted to cut and tied a marker to one end and the screw to the other. Then I just drew my circle with the string taught - that gave me a perfect circle at the right diameter. After that I drilled a pilot hole and used a jigsaw to cut out my hole.

Alternatively, you can measure to find the center of the hood and use the top of the air cleaner as a template for a cut (if thats the size you want).

I'd recommend rivets for the scoop - that way you dont have to worry about messing with the brace.

Hope that helps.

I'm going through some similar steps right now with my scoop install. The hood that was on my Bronco was bent in every direction and would have been virtually impossible to ever straighten out. I had a very nice Ford hood as a spare but someone had cut a hole in it previously. I really don't care for scoops, but the hood was in perfect condition otherwise. I decided to order a 1" high small scoop that would cover the hole. Then I decided to turn it backwards much like a cowl induction. The scoop I received had 4 mounting studs that worked out great, however, I am trying to decide whether to seal the scoop to the hood before painting??? I don't want to have to deal with the bond breaking loose due to vibration in the future. So, I'm all up for recommendations as to what to use? Should I use a flexible sealer such as rain gutter sealer, or what? The scoop doesn't look bad without being sealed and will probably look better once it is all painted one color. At a crossroads, and I don't want any future problems with the bond if I decide to go that direction.

Curt - I bondo'd my hood (on my old bronco) to blend the scoop into the hood but it ended up looking like crap. It cracked from shutting the hood and was just a bad idea (but I'm not the best at bodywork so take that with a grain of salt). In the end I wish I had just riveted it and left it as is. If you are going to try to seal it up from water you might want to consider something that has a lot of give or flex to it.

I got the scoop on, pretty painless. It was a little nerve wracking drilling holes in my hood. The scoop has gaps on the back so I need to grind some fiberglass off the back for a tight fit. After that I'll need a smaller air cleaner to cut the hole in the hood. Now time to start on the Mojave heater,Tuffy console and then the top.

The Scoop

Here is what I decided to do. Like I said, I am really not a big fan of scoops but the hole already existed in this super straight hood! This gives it a cowl induction look. I bought the scoop on ebay for $69 with free shipping. It appears to be very good quality fiberglass, but I swear they must make these as they sell them! I smelled the package when it arrived!

What to do now?

After taking some fiberglass off the back to fit the hood contour. I started to tighten the bolts down and on the last bolt guess what happens.:mad::mad:

Now, Should I call the company That I bought it from and ask for a new one or try to fix it myself. The scoop was not pulled down tight to the hood when this happened. The scoop was purchased 6 months ago so I'm prolly screwed.

If I try to fix it I'm worried it will come back apart, and the chances of a new scoop fitting the exact same holes is hopeless :mad::mad:

Same thing happened to mine! I cleaned the surface real well and used JB Weld, quick set. Should be a permanent fix, stonger than before.

Tom I got the scoop from Jeff's BG. I really like the look of it, just not real happy about the bolts pulling out. If I was wrenching on it real hard I could see it twisting out of the glass, but like I said it wasn't even pulled tight to the hood yet and as soon as it went the one behind it that was tight came loose also. I thinking a bad batch of resin or something.

wife is picking up some jb weld i think I'll drill some small holes under all the bolts and cover them all with JB. what a PITA should have been workin on the heater by now

OK here's what I'm tryin. I drilled some holes under all the bolts on the scoop, whatever is underneath the fiberglass was soft ( looks and smells like bondo that's not cured ) Now I'll use the JB to push into the holes and around the bolts. Let her set over night and tighten with a 3' cheater tomorrow.

basically, measure from each fender to the air cleaner stud on the carb. transfer that measurement to the hood, and then cut a round hole maybe an inch or so larger than the air cleaner you're using.
