Many owners just don't bother to tune a carb properly. Then they're unhappy with it.
I recently tuned mine with a wideband air/fuel meter and a vacuum gauge.
Here's my rolling test lab.

Funny, I have EFI and still had a vacuum gauge connected troubleshooting!

You guys must have some gnarly ethanol blends up there...I've never seen that here. Recently took a 3 year old carb out of storage,
popped the top and it still had liquid fuel in it and no green globs.

Jeez, I drive mine everyday and I still find stuff growing in the bowl!

Could it be that the humid southern states have more issue with ethanol separation?
I've been parking mine for five months a year for the past eight years. I inspected the carb when re-jetting, and it was as clean as a whistle.

High humidity makes ethanol worse for sure.
It’s pretty dry in Colorado.... but it still wreaks havoc on small engine carbs.

So for my small engines, I fuel up at a Murphy’s, which has straight gasoline

I've had to deal with the jelly on about everything carb related. Even my Pop's golf cart while not a "carb" had to be cleaned at the start of each year. That Jelly is nasty stuff I tell you what.

I went to pure gas in all my carb stuff including the golf cart and no more jelly.

Yes I attribute the issue to high humidity interacting with the Eth.

We are dry in western Montana and have issues too, but that picture is certainly an extreme example. We're fortunate enough to still have ethanol free fuel available at the pump, so that is what I run in everything and I don't have any issues with it. I don't even need to use fuel stabilizer for winter storage.

I use the pure gas website to find ethanol free gas in my area. I use it in my brush cutters, chain saws, and blowers. But I still run them dry at the end of each season. My cars though, get ethanol gas only. They sit for months at a time without an issue.

I believe so. I really don't have an issue with ethanol if driving often, but if a vehicle sits so long that the bowls dry out then you may as well expect problems.

Oh, and back to the fuel injection. I bought a whole Mountaineer for the engine, harness, and injection to go into my daily driver. By the time I pulled it all I decided that's way more stuff than my simple mind can deal with. In the end I have the roller engine, serpentine, and a carb. I'm happy with it!
