on my last build i followed the emotoman build. I had to custom make the clocking ring, fire wall reinforcement plate purchase the MC and lengthen the rod. with all the ebay options available now for adapting hydro boosters to the firewall or to a 76-77 brake booster brackets wondering what route members have gone and what was purchased and from where.

keeping this low budget so junkyard booster is the plan. a vendor supplied mounting options

i have a 99-04 booster that i was planning for my 79 that i will use if i go the emotoman route again

Made my own firewall bracket ,, HB is from a 06 2500 Silverado (customer take off resealed with pirate jack kit). Clocked 90 • ,, obvious if running ford efi clearance would be an issue ,, plug access easy ,, valve cover removal would require loosing firewall bolts and shifting assembly out of way ,, pedal feel and minimal travel ,, as well as any OE application

Auto or manual?

Looking for lot's of clearance or is the goal for low buck but great brakes?

If you want, there are several EZ options to move the HB/MC over and not need that huge offset bracket.

Use the clutch rod area on the swing pedal. Cut a plate to mount the HB and beef the firewall up.

Do what ya need to do to fit the rod from the HB to the swingarm assbly and it looks stock. Done this many times and there are variations. I started with a few different locations and now it's even farther towards the DS fender and totally out of the way. HB setups are soooo long already.

Done a keyway on the swingarm shaft also and used it to move the rod to the HB. Lot's of options. Last option I'd want is the huge bracket.

I've used several different M/C's but always the Astro HB unit which I hear are getting harder to find...
:(
I wanted an alum/plastic mc (used a complete Astro setup for "stockish" brakes for yrs) because of the leakage issues but since I use mine a LOT, fluid gets splashed around but also there's nothing much uglier than a rusty mc hanging off your firewall.

Currently use a M/C from a HB Chebby 3/4ton pickup with 1.25" bore. (Astro couldn't move enough fluid for JB7 size caliper). Perfect amount of fluid volume moved for 3/4 ton calipers now and the best pedal I've felt (personal opinion of course) for a HB setup. Not much throw, etc. (spell chk edits)

I put sd hb on my 79 F250 CC. If you search my posts I'm pretty sure I mentioned in a thread what hoses etc I used, if not get back to me.They are all ford OEM and I think I got them from rock auto. The lines bolted up to the stock box and I got a dual return OEM Ford pump that was the same as the pump on my 79. All brand new and off the top of my fuzzy memory it was under $500. Actually the pump was a new Lares, OEM style.

I cut and welded the stock offset bracket to match the length of the pushrod. I wanted the black plastic mc that guys on here used to use so I got some aluminum plate from Amazon and made an adapter for the longer push rod. The stock brake lines connected to the new mc.

Apologies for the highjack.

No idea how well the '79 firewall compares to the '96 firewall, but I bought an H-B unit from Vanco for the '96 and it appears to be an OEM H-B for an F-350 of that age range as it looks to be all OEM parts and it bolted on. I bought it new as that was my first H-B conversion and it was part of a snow-balling project.
Were I doing that conversion now I'd go looking for an F-350 with H-B and transplant it.

For plumbing I convert everything to AN/JIC, and use appropriate hose and hose ends to make my own. On the Wagon some of the return plumbing is run through tubing flared to AN/JIC and using AN tube nuts & sleeves.

great info here for the 79 HB conversion- thanks!

now sure where we can start looking on your previous threads but if you come across it something lets us know

all the research i have done in the past were more geared towards the 99-04 SD HB, some custom lines and reuse/modify the bracket that goes between the firewall and vacuum booster to accept the HB. OE hoses would make this alot easer

1990 F-350 7.3L booster from the mounting end, looks very similar to how I recall the booster that I used:
B5015-BAC.jpg

What a '79s booster mounting looks like according to RA:
B1087-BAC.jpg

Stud dims look pretty close, just offset down in the case of the H-B unit. I wouldn't expect it to be too difficult to overcome that.

No worries.

You can click on a user names profile and look at their posts etc.

That is what I used. Not sure if I took a photo of the modified bracket, will look and post if I did. It's pretty self explanatory as you are shortening/modifying to suit.

Lares pump LSC-12349 $138 Summit Racing

I can't find the details for the mc. It was off a Dodge and it was black. It has been used many times over the years on cb, so if you do a search it will come up. It was cheap.

I will take a few photos later and post them up, My F250 has the stock disc/drum brakes. Awesome brakes now and took a little getting used to. They are instantaneous and if I'm not conscious about using them after not having driven the truck in a week, the first time I touch them is a wake up call.

I did not add any valves etc to the brake system.

I removed the bracket and placed the hb against the firewall so I could connect the hb push rod to the pedal. Then measured the gap between hb and firewall also taking into consideration the offset.

I tacked 1 side up first and installed it, then the other, to check that it was correct. I then completed the hb install and test drove the truck around the block. I removed 1 half of the bracket, fully welded and re-installed, rinse and repeat. That way I could leave the hb system intact.

You need to fill some holes then re-drill mounting holes for the hb, I can't remember if it was 1,2 or 4 🤣

I will post installed photos once the rain stops.

FWIW that sharp 90° on the pump outlet isn't doing you any favors. Looks like just making the connection at all might have been a PITA, but if you can change it to a formed tube type 90° the fluid cavitation and temps should both drop.

As I recall that's the Dodge m/c?

Yes it's a dodge something.

The 90 at the pump is the factory hose configuration of the sd truck this is from, so I don't plan on changing it at all. It was easy to connect. I do have a cooler to install but haven't had the time. This is a 2wd truck that I cruise around locally with, so I'm not too worried about temps.

So you took the factory vacuum assist bracket, modified it so the HB unit would bolt to it. Offset it from the firewall so the HB rod doesn't need to be modified, as in off the shelf replacement is retained.

How far off the firewall is is the HB now? (Looking for a reference point)
Summit shows the PS pump is unavailable for order.
I did hit Rock auto and that specific HB Part# did not pop up, but a number of like numbers did, but they are not even close to what you have shown.

Very interested in this mod. I looked at an HB upgrade from one of the Bronco Vendors and the pricing pushed me away.
Other than having to drive this rather gutless 351M smog motor in CA, my biggest complaint would be having to plan my stops in advance with stock brakes and 33" tires.

I consider going to a Saginaw PS pump to be part of the conversion effort. I doubt that I'd do it any other way. Maybe with the upgraded PS pump options for the Explorer front dress I wouldn't. The '96 got an E-250 Saginaw pump conversion and the Wagon already had a TC II on it.

Yes, so the hb rod did not need adjusting and everything is off the shelf.

1 7/8" give or take, but that measurement is what worked in my truck with the hb I got. It's easy to connect the pushrod to the pedal and measure what you need.

That Motorcraft HB was available everywhere when I purchased it last year. I only got it at rock auto due to the hoses being so cheap there.

I think the hb kits that any vendor sells are expensive, if you can do the legwork (I've done the legwork for you) and bracket mod yourself. I was going to get a kit from battle born brakes as he has the cheapest prices I have seen. But I saved $300 and had the satisfaction of working this out myself. Plus I can get a cheap replacement hose at any parts house, if I ever need one. Same as the pump although it's a brand new Lares, so fingers crossed. And they are all brand name parts, his are from China.

The 351m with 3.73:1 rear in my crew cab scoots along pretty good and as fast as I can shift the old tired 4 banger. I have a 6r80 that I am going to put behind it, which will wake it up enough for me.
