Hydroboost Firewall Plate

What are everyone's thoughts and experiences on making a Hydroboost Firewall plate? Will 3/16" be about right? Either aluminum or steel work? Any issues moving the unit up and further to the driver side for more clearance? I'm using the Ford super duty HB unit and the Dodge diplomat MC.

Thanks

3/16" steel should be adequate.

Moving it means that you will need to move the pedal or make other changes so that the linkage rod to the booster is moving in a straight line.

Here's a little writeup on the hydroboost conversion from Motoman's web site. I made the firewall plate and the booster to MC adapter. Take a look under the dash where the brake pedal rod goes through the firewall. Not much room to move the booster to the drivers side as you will be into the pedal cage.

I used 1/4 steel but I would think 3/16 would be just fine also.

My Bronco was a 3 spd man. and now will be an auto so I moved the HB and brake pedal over to where the clutch was. All I have left to do is put a bend in the pedal to move it back over towards the accelerator.

Steve,

I was hoping you would respond. What material did you use? It looks like sand blasted aluminum? Either is easy enough to work with, but the alum is a lot faster to cut. Do you remember how thick the plate is?

sykanr0ng, good points. I didn't think it could be moved a whole lot because of the reasons you listed but wildhorses shows the firewall hole being enlarged for more clearance. I guess maybe it can be moved a little but not a whole lot...

Thanks frdboy. That is the exact HB unit and MC I am using. I'm just going to clock the HB 90 degrees like Steve and motoman did. I have an auto trans so I'll have to use the stock location but using the clutch area is pretty slick.

Yes, I used 3/16 steel. It actually cut easy enough with a jig saw. Motoman likes to paint everything, and he used aluminum engine paint on that plate.

Edit:

Here's another option. Seen a couple guys on here using this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-Bronc...new-/221823434562?hash=item33a5b4ff42&vxp=mtr

Some one needs to make a small bracket like the one in wild hourses hydroboost kit out of aluminum or steel and sell them . I have seen these on several broncos at the super celeb. In tenn. And they are small and real nice . One is slightly angled for more clearance like for a 351W They won't sell you just the bracket so you can put your own booster on it only sold as kit .

Another vote for 3/16 steel plate, used it on my conversion with the SD hydroboost unit and it turned out great. The stock bracket that comes with the reman booster is roughly the same thickness, figured good enough for OEM, good enough for me.

I actually drew mine up using free CAD software and sent the file directly to a local machine shop to go right into their CNC waterjet (didn't hurt that the owner has an EB). Paid $100 for that and the 1/2 alum bracket cut the same way. Thought about it at the time to have him cut a half dozen out, but wasn't sure when or if I'd ever get my money back selling them.

The stock mounting plate for my Mustang hydroboost measures 0.173"
0.187" is 3/16"
Made of steel, it does have a formed area where the booster mounts so it might be a bit more rigid than flat stock.

I'm thinking about clocking the plate 90° to angle it away from the intake, but then I'll want a different MC reservoir.

Thanks everyone.

I was able to get the nut off with an air chisel. Only had to hit it for 3-4 seconds and about 1/4 of a turn, before it was loose enough to get the channel locks in there to turn it. It really didn't mar the nut too bad.

I spent some time in my treasure/scrap pile behind the back fence and found the perfect 3/16" piece of steel. It will just get painted old school Rustoleum Black once it's finished and cleaned up.

BC sells that plate by itself on eBay.

What are the pro's/con's of this flat bracket vs the offset bracket(ebay) that was posted earlier in this thread?
