Hydroboost questions

When I bought my Bronco 4 years ago it came with parts for hydroboost. Now that I'm ready to install it I need to know what vehicle the hb came off of. I think it is off a 96-98 mustang. Can someone confirm?

Also, can I remove the block on the top of the hb and plumb it without it? I need to rotate the hb so I can get my mc sitting like it should, and that block will not clear the hood if I rotate the hb.

I found a couple of pics of the hb on line but I haven't seen any with that block. The ports aren't marked so I need to find out which is hp which is lp and any other info I might need.

Thanks.

Does that block have a terminal or spot for a 12v hook up? If so it's got an electric solenoid that activates to keep brakes if you loose pressure from the ps pump. That's my guess. I was talking to a maintenance guy at napa about em. Said the street sweepers use em. Sounded like a good set up. He said they're like $800 for a rebuilt one. A place in Fullerton ca deals with em. That would be cool if you scored one.

On the Mustang hydroboost that block is the attachment for one of the hoses, the port itself is not threaded. Do not lose it, they are unobtainium.

No 12v hookup. I'll post up some more pics with the block removed. I thought I had it figured out, but I'm back to square one.

I'm running mine with the block as well. With 1 inch BL I don't have a clearance issue.

Must be a mustang thing. I've been curious to see one of the units with the electric backup on it. I was gonna upgrade to one until he said the price. I think he said ups trucks run em too.

Are you running the same one? Can you post some pics of your set up? I'm willing to add a 1" body lift. I've been thinking of adding a bl for a while.

Thanks.

Can someone recommend a good thread on hydro boost setup? Benefits? Installation? That sort of thing. I’m really interested in running a hydro system on this 66 I’m putting together

Installation varies depending on which way you go. Theres complete kits from the vendors or you can grab parts from the boneyard and make your own hoses. If the later take pics so you remember the hose routing. As long as the hoses are plumbed in right it's pretty straight forward. Benefits are better braking. Not blowing a booster every year or two. Depending on set up takes less space than vacuum booster. .

The mounting plate has a tab in the hole which can be removed and the plate can then be turned to change the angle.
The tab is there so the assembly line workers can put them together fast and still get them right for the original vehicle, it has no other purpose.

Thank you. I’ve only had vacuum booster on my vehicles so I’m trying to learn.

I'm using the hb hose kit from wild horses. Not sure about the fitting for this port. Does it need an o ring?

Also, I have the heavy duty mc from wild horses, but I dont think it will work with my hb. The wild horses mc comes with a "bullet" that is supposed to be used in the mc where the hb rod goes in, but the rod on the hb is too long.
Actually the bullet spacer makes the mc too shallow.

There is no adjustability for the rod on the hb, and I think I have to use a mc from a mustang.
Does that sound right?

I'm not as familiar with the Mustang boosters as I am with the more common ones, but I'm pretty certain that port you're pointing to does need an o-ring (should be a metric p/s fitting).

The master you have from WH is likely one of the aftermarket units based on the GM master cylinders. It probably has a deep bore in the back of the piston (for manual brakes) and the bullet makes the hole more shallow to allow for the shorter pushrod on the booster in their kit. The pushrod length and master cylinder depth varies from unit-to-unit and it's one of the variables that must be addressed when piecing something together yourself. You may also find that the master cylinder mounting hole spacing is different than the studs on the booster (3.2" vs. 3.4"). The Mustang master cylinder should bolt up just fine since that's what it originally came with - Broncobowsher and a few others on here have successfully used that setup without issues. You can use a different master cylinder if you'd like, knowing there might be some more modifications needed to get it to work right.

You probably also realize the pushrod into the booster that hooks to the brake pedal is too short and will be need to be lengthened as well.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

After some more searching I found some hb units that look like mine. It looks like the ones found on the 03-04 mustang GT/Cobra.

I'm using the bracket that angles the hb over the wheel well. The only downside to this is I can't rotate the hb to make the master cylinder sit level. If I do clock it to sit level then the block with the return line hits the hood.

I either install a 1" body lift for clearance or find an hb unit that doesn't use that block..

I could try to mount it directly to the firewall, but I like that my brake linkage is already set up to use the bracket.
