I put some feelers out to locate some rocks and when I spoke with a friend who runs dump trucks for a living he said I basically had 3 options:
- Buy from a quary and pay to truck it in (Very expensive since the quary charges more per ton for big ones than thay do gravel and trucking is $75 per hour including loading/driving/unloading)
- Find free rocks and pay to truck them in
- Find a contruction site close by that needs the type and size of rock I want hauled off site and let them use my place as a dump site, free rocks, free hauling.
Obviously I wanted option three, but that could take a very long time to get that to come together. The friend of mine had a buddy of his who also runs dump trucks for a living and was having some of his land cleared for for a pond and pasture and had a bunch of these piled up (probably 10-12 loads worth).
I had to pay $150 a load, basicly to cover paying the guy who is clearing the land to use his big front end loader to load the truck and some fuel cost for the truck. I guess the loader costs about $100 per hour.
So, to answer your question, about $600 for the 4 loads I'll be getting from there. Now that I have a pile started, I'll keep my eyes open for the totally free ones to add to it.
The bottom line.....a LOT cheaper than the much smaller crushed carbon types ;D .
