I got the new sending unit installed on the 302 and have the same issues as before...oil reads 5psi at any rpm. I checked it yesterday with a mechanical gauge and it's 30 at warm idle. While scratching my head I see a flashing coming from the ivr. Nice green flash like a turn signal indicator, but I'm pretty sure that the ivr isn't supposed to flash like that....or am I wrong. As this was going on I watched the op gauge go to max then drop back to 0, then settle on 5 again. The temp gauge starts out at 170 with a cold engine.
Can I get an amen that I need a new ivr? Or should I be digging elsewhere?

To an extent, yes the IVR does flash. It gives about an average of 5V to the gauges.

Now a green flash? You should not be seeing any arcing. Oil reads low, temp reads high. Sounds like other issues to me. But the IVR also sounds like it is getting bad.

whats an IVR?

IVR ....irregular volt reader
Close... Instrument Voltage Regulator

I dunno if the new solid state IVRs have an LED... Maybe??? But what you should be looking at is the output of the IVR to the sending units. That should be a pulsing voltage. At least it is on the original electro-mechanical ones.

I've gone over the rest of the system. All wiring and connections are good.
Thought it might be a grounding issue but that has been ruled out. I'm really suspecting the ivr at this point. To be clear the green flashing wasn't rythmic it was somewhat random, I think it's arcing internally. I'll get a new one and see what happens.

Not real sure how youd see flashing from the IVR as its a closed case but it would show a arc as the points open and close. If its arcing outside the case then yes maybe its bad. I hope you have the gauge cluster out while watching this flashing unles your a contortionist.:-X Its pretty hard to see up under the dash let alone get your head up in there.

I have a solid state IVR no LED on mine.

Update

Update: I found why the ivr was flashing. Somehow a piece of stray solder had made it's way to the output terminal of the ivr...grounding it. No wonder it was flashing. New one will be here tomorrow.

So when you saw that, did a voice in your head go "Well there's your problem right there." with a smiley face at the end? ;D

Good when you find things that are obvious. When it comes to electrical stuff and Broncos, "electrical" and "obvious" do not get uttered in the same paragraph very often.
