I have these two linkages.

As far as I know the bottom one is the stock column shift to C4 linkage.

Anyone ever seen the top one in an EB?

I bought it from a guy here on CB a few years back as a stock linkage, but I'm now questioning that.

Were there two different styles over the years?

My 74' detent kickdown linkage is not like that at all. It has multiple bends to clear bell housing, firewall and intake. I looked at a later model also and it is still similar to the 74' style.

These are shift linkages for putting the transmission in gear P-R-N-D-2-1. They are not kickdown linkages.

Top looks like C4 linkage. Bottom looks like late manual linkage.

The bottom one is what my '77 uses. I got that from a '73 in a junk yard to convert the 3 on a tree to a C4 in the late '80s. Mine has a slight bend near the top to clear the exhaust manifold. It may not be apparent, from the perspective of the photo. It's hard to see in Tom's photo too. The bottom bend is more like the one om the bottom rod.

This is interesting...When I bought my c4 the guy gave me the same linkage you show on the top. When I tried to install it I found it doesn't work, so I ordered the one from Tom's.
It would be nice to know what the shorter linkage is used for

The top linkage is the shorter of the two shift rods for stock three-on-the-tree. It uses the improved column shift arm bushing (the same style as the auto shift rod which is the lower shift rod pictured). Both styles began in ‘73 and continued into ‘77. If that automatic rod is stock, it will have a Ford part # on it. The auto rod is available aftermarket from Tom’s, but no one is making three-on-the-tree rods yet that I am aware of.
