is the stud on the back of the ignition switch supposed to turn freely? one of the threads was jacked up and when I ran a die over it i noticed it spins feely whereas my old one does not.

I can't imagine it is supposed to spin as it's an electrical connection and how would one attach the stud nut to hold the ring terminals if it spins?

red neck try. screw the nut on the bolt as far as you can and grip the bolt with pliers and thighten the nut. If the assembly does not work throw it away and buy a new one.
