Wow, Glad you're ok and sorry about your Bronco. I'm glad to see this post though as I have been considering swapping my fixed Corbeau seats for reclining seats. Maybe I'll stick with what I've got now. I also have Simpson wide 5 point harnesses that I never use as intended for normal driving. The submarine straps aren't even installed. I use the lap belts only. Maybe I should consider swapping to the 3 point belts now..

I see it's up for auction. Just a formality or you going to try to rebuild?

Hi,

Glad you made it out of that with just a few bumps and bruises. Your thread is prompting me to go back and rethink something.

My seatbelts were 3 point belts that all the vendors sell. They work as they should and held me suspended in my truck once my truck stopped rolling. If you only have lap belts make sure to make this relatively inexpensive investment TODAY.

We have Baja SS seats in our '71. We always use lap belts. I know we should... but, we don't use the shoulder belts, and the anti-submarine belts were never installed by the previous owner.

A couple of years ago I bought 3-point belts from Corbeau. In Moab last year I made arrangements to have the belts installed. (I thought it would be good to have someone experienced do this.)

The problem was with the portion of the belt system that attaches to inside (with the buckle). The bolster on the SS seat is pretty tight (not much different to yours). I was told that the right way to do the install would be to install that part of the belt on the inside of the bolster; but, I was told that it would really be uncomfortable. Then I was told that if it was installed on the outside of the bolster the belt system wouldn't hold us into to the seat. No right choice.

I thought it would make me use the shoulder belts more; but, it didn't happen on that trip. Me being lazy.

Your thread lit a fire under me.

Just curious how you installed your belts. Also curious if anyone else has any thoughts on the best way to use 3-point belts with a high bolster seat.

Thanks for making me rethink this.

Take Care,

Jeff

Wow! Glad to hear that you are OK! This is definitely a motivator for me to get off me Butt and get my 3 Point belts installed as well. I think that my rollcage is sound but the lack of seat belts in my truck is not a good thing and will be rectified before I drive it again. In any case, so happy that you are safe and sound and no major injuries. Take it easy and feel better!

Glad you are OK. This is exactly why I am a proponent of cages and 3 point belts. Our broncos do not have crumple zones so they will transfer all of the impact inertia right into you, nothing there to absorb it like new cars are built to do today. That being said, 3 point belts, headrests and a cage of some sort is typically a great start. Again I am glad for you that you have walked away and your bronco can be rebuilt or replaced.

I didn't read "all" of the posts in this thread....

But it was a post like this here at CB many moons ago that pushed me to get my JBG Overhaulin' 4 point.
I put off

Duff Long Arms
A/C
Insulation
Explorer Serp
Detroit Locker
Chromo shafts
Re-gear

All to do that cage because a thread like this scared the sh#t out of me.

Now years later

I have almost all of the other things on the list, just took more time.
For many years now I have been able to go four wheeling with my daughter in relative safety/comfort because I did the cage early on.
I wouldn't change a thing.

Very happy to hear of your recovery from what was an awful accident. Also very happy you posted this. There's some guy out there right now adjusting his wish list and pushing roll bar/cage to the top.

Kudos and thank you for posting .....

Glad you are ok. My next truck will undoubtably have a family cage and 3 point belts all the way around.

Awesome. It was my duty to post my story and it makes me happy to know so many people are re-thinking their safety.

I am physically fine and the mental part is coming back. I honestly didn't think I would ever drive a bronco(was having flashbacks of the accident) again but now I am starting to think about the recovery of my truck. I think it needs to be done, it has to be done.

Thanks guys. I really just want to caution everyone, I survived for a reason and hopefully it saves someone else's life.

The roll cage was a smitty built that someone added a front cage to. I had this looked at by several builders and they all agreed it was sound, and as it turned out it was. It was not tied to the frame but was attached at 6 different points. If I were ever to buy one again, I'd probably by BC's because they have actually tested it proven it works. I was on the freeway going about 50-55mph.

The one thing I noticed looking at my truck today is that my brand new seats did fail. Something else to think about when you are building/upgrading. In a way though, the seat failure possibly prevented my head from hitting the roll cage. Who knows.

Seriously be safe guys.
So glad you are ok. I am getting ready to farm out my Toms family cage and have a question. Did the feet of yours lune up with the floor support? If so, how was the plate underneath done? Anyone with pics would be greatly appreciated.
