I have been looking around for a swap for my tired 6 cylinder. I kind of like the idea of an inline 6, I know the 5.0 or 351 is a no brainier. Of course Ford never made a modern inline 6. Actually the only engine i could find that made any sense was the Trailblazer motor, The Vortec 4200. Its 291 hp, 275 ft/lbs of torque all aluminum and only weighs 400lbs. I know a Chevy motor in a Ford, hang me by my thumbs.

I think it would be something a little different, and would not have cooling problems like the V8s. Besides they are pretty cheap in the boneyards.

The light lines are the 2006 and up motors and the heavier lines are the 200y and down. I actually like the torque curves of the eariler motors

Only one of the greatest engines on the PLANET!!! 4.9L (300cid) straight 6. A couple guys on here run'em. A little tricky to get in but it can be done. TONS of torque and a motor that will run forever. The later model ones up to '96 have EFI too. One day I will build a Bronco with one!

I guess when i said modern, i meant something like double over head cam, 4 valve per cylinder and variable valve timing, all aluminum, etc. The Ford 300 is a great motor, but i think it's performance is limited due to it's non cross flow head.

Look at the Autralian Fords. They were doing neat stuff with turboed crossflow heads on the I6.

From people that worked at GM I know well, that I5 and I6 were junk. the press behind them was backed heavily by the GM propaganda system.

What are you looking to get out of this? I drove a skyline GTR V-SPEC with a twin turbo I6 a few years ago. The RB26DETT if you want to search. That motor was gutless below 5000 RPM, but between 5000 and 8300 redline it was an insane rocket. And it was stock at too! There are countless upgrades to that engine that can push it over 1,000 HP. Same engine used in one of the Fast and Fourious movies swapped into a Mustang.

Dont know why you'd want that POS motor in a bronco but do what you want. Dont see it gaining anything different is all it would be I wouldnt expect any mileage gains either with only a high of 20 hiway in vehicles that are a little more aroedynamic than a bronco.
Also I believe the front diff is part of the oil pan on those engines so it would require a custom pan to delete that diff.
